She works in a nursery and has just called in a panic asking me what to do....any ideas of simple costumes that can be rigged up from nothing?

I was thinking some kind of waitress? What character would that be?

I have some nice tiaras...what could she be with one of those? She's 27 and about a size 16 so no skimpy stuff!

My go-to is always Harry Potter, pair of glasses and a black hairdressing cape, job done.

CMOTDibbler · 04/03/2015 20:27

waitress - Mrs Wobble the Waitress from the Ahlberg happy family books

jeans and a t shirt - Mum in Harry and the Dinosaurs

tiara and normal clothes - Queen from the Little Princess books

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 04/03/2015 20:27

For an adult?

Where's Wally
Paddington if she owns a duffle coat
Sophie from Tiger who came to tea (tiger food tin accessory ) if she can get patterned tights
Old lady or Pearl from Julia Donaldson books

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 04/03/2015 20:29

If she owns a Winnie the Pooh toy, Christopher Robin.

If she owns a Paddington toy , Mrs Brown.

HibernoCaledonian · 04/03/2015 20:30

Miss Honey from Matilda - Skirt, nice blouse, glasses.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 04/03/2015 20:31

Stickman if she has enough brown clothes.

Anything from Harry Potter (though probably a bit old for nursery kids)

AuntieStella · 04/03/2015 20:33

Have you an animal onesie you could lend her? There's bound to be a nursery-friendly character that matches.

BifsWif · 04/03/2015 20:34

Rip Up/dirty some old clothes, backcomb her hair, mess up her face a bit - Mrs Twit

flora717 · 04/03/2015 20:35

Presumably nursery type stories?
The woman who lived in a shoe (a pinny/ apron, a large boot stuff a few dolls in as her 'children').
The woman from a squash and a squeeze wears a pinny too.
Got any obvious props feather boa (the witches roald dahl); glasses & knitting needles, Mrs Weasley from HP.

flora717 · 04/03/2015 20:38

..... if you/ she have a sheet you could fashion a Peplos = instant greek goddess (add a bow and arrow for Artemis; Owl for Athena?, or be Hera or Aphrodite).

CurlyWurlyCake · 04/03/2015 20:38

I was going to say stickman as well. Brown top and trousers, mud on the face with some leaves in his/her hair.

LaSalle · 04/03/2015 20:43

Most kids at our school turn up in some sort of dress up they already have, so if she has a princess dress, you think of a book with a princess, or a nurse, or a policeman etc.

gooeycookie · 04/03/2015 20:47

If you have a tiara, does she have a half-decent pair of pjs? Add a tennis ball and she's the Princess & the Pea! another Book Day emergency here

BigEyedOwl · 04/03/2015 20:48

Boy in the striped pyjamas? Should be easy enough to pull off and then he can reuse the pyjamas

MrsTawdry · 04/03/2015 20:49

Thanks all! She can't get anything as it's tomorrow but I suggested Tracy Beaker and she has a curly wig so she's doing that! :D

I know she's got something now. But in case others are reading Laura's star is also very easy. PJ's, hoodie or dressing gown (depending on scene) and cardboard star.
