To not know which job to choose?

Need some advice.

I have applied for 2 jobs, both part time, nothing serious just working in a pub to get some extra money while I study but I have been offered both and now I don't know which to go for :/

Job A is with a well known pub chain, always busy, will never lack for hours but obviously will have to work changing shifts to coincide with other staffs holiday & shifts. Minimum wage, plenty of staff members to cover me if I want to have a particular day off.

Job B is working with two old friends of mine who have recently taken over a pub. There would only be me and one other staff member so not much flexibility if I wanted/needed time off. Probably quiet initially but plenty of hours to do as there will only be 2 members of staff! Over minimum wage.

Aibu to go with my gut and go with is job B? They are due to open next week and I feel like if they have to start looking for someone else it will make life really difficult for them. Also as an independent place they make their own rules so probably a much more relaxed place to work.

DP thinks I should go with job A, the big chain, as they are almost guaranteed to not 'go under' and I will get paid holiday hours, can take time off etc but as they are a big chain they are very strict about how things are done.

I genuinely don't know what would be best! I know Aibu for complaining about having 2 jobs but I just hate letting anyone down and I don't think it's realistic to do 2 jobs while I'm studying so it looks like I will have to let someone down and I feel awful. Please help!

B sounds much nicer. I'd go with that one.

Mrscog · 04/03/2015 11:42

B - you'll gain much more business experience to draw on, and A will always be there as a fall back.

IAmAShitHotLawyer · 04/03/2015 11:43

Job A. So what if there're strict? That's just to ensure things get done properly.

LikeTheShoes · 04/03/2015 11:43

B
if they go under you can always work at weatherspoons A

MajesticWhine · 04/03/2015 11:44

You are not letting anyone down unless you have actually said yes. It sounds like you feel committed to B... but if you haven't actually said you will do it, then you shouldn't feel committed, you need to put yourself first. It will not be difficult for them to get bar staff, so don't think like this.

Go with the job that will give you the most flexibility. So if you really need the time off for your studies, then you can get it.

ApignamedJasper · 04/03/2015 11:45

Haha like, job A is very similar to wetherspoons!

I'd go for B. If it doesn't work out, you'll always be able to get a job like job A.

ApignamedJasper · 04/03/2015 11:49

Majestic I stupidly have said yes to both already, I'm just such a people pleaser I didnt want to turn either of them down :(

I have my first shift pencilled in for next week with A and I'm dreading it. I know it's silly but because its a chain it's all about TARGETS and SPEED and DOING THINGS TO SPECIFICATION and so on. The pressure!! It probably doesn't help that I haven't worked in a few years as I've been a SAHM so I'm not full of confidence in the workplace.

My DD worked as a waitress in a big chain hotel/restaurant. She found that they just didn't give a shit about the staff and would make changes with no consolation. People came and went constantly and there was no continuity of staff. She hated it.

On that basis i would go with job B. It will be great to be in at the beginning of a business and you can probably make a good contribution and get experience which will be beneficial further down the line when looking for a permanent job after your studies.

MajesticWhine · 04/03/2015 12:00

This is the sort of mess I would get myself into Smile. I think it would be best to go with B.

ilovesooty · 04/03/2015 12:01

B. I bet A is zero hour anyway. But what on earth were you thinking of accepting both?

MaidOfStars · 04/03/2015 12:04

Think of the future. Which is going to look best on your CV (if either would be included)? Chances to learn business skills? Do both offer pensions?

FWIW, I worked in type A jobs while studying. Yes, it was busy and yes, there were rules, but every shift went really quickly, and everything ran so smoothly. And I didn't want any responsibility or "learning business" shit going on.

MaidOfStars · 04/03/2015 12:04

I'm just such a people pleaser I didnt want to turn either of them down

This is a life skill that you need to learn.

babybottombutter · 04/03/2015 12:05

It's not people pleasing to say yes to more things you can do then let them down!

B sounds more relaxed but A might have more training/opportunities for progression in either that or other pubs.

MaidOfStars · 04/03/2015 12:35

Oh yes, I would add that my A pub Wetherspoons were absolutely desperate for me to join their management programme (I think even in a "university town", being on a degree course was a marker of intelligence in that environment). Had I been a business/management/etc type person, it would have been an excellent opportunity/great pay/etc but as it happens, completely in opposition to my career plans for biology research....didn't stop them trying, mind.

ApignamedJasper · 04/03/2015 17:50

Yes, that is definately true Maid!

Progression isn't really an issue as the career I'm studying for is in a totally different direction than the job I'll be doing now!

B.

InfinitySeven · 04/03/2015 18:59

If B becomes successful, which it is obviously aiming to do, then they'll bring in processes etc too, and it could be even more stressful because the margins will be much smaller than for a national chain with lots of staff.
