Already been to Sainburys (no Gruffalo costumes) snd Toys Are Us (usual Spiderman/Star Wars costumes); refuse to pay £10 for a cardboard Endeman (Minecraft) head. Fed up with the school expecting parents to fork out. AIBU?

I rarely buy anything and I'm as creative as a plank of woodGrin

We've done Harry and his bucket of dinosaurs. Normal clothes, bucket, dinosaurs......
Charlie and the chocolate factory. Too small clothes, made a golden ticket.
George and his marvelous medicine. Bottle of goo and big spoon.

Poor ds2 had dress up as a chocolate bar last weekHmm With the hello of a glue gun, he went as a packet of maltesers.

Jeez. Is this what I have to look forward to as a mother? Why can't they just do school stuff in school instead in imposing on people's home lives like this? TBH I don't even agree with homework for young children.

DS is going as George from George's Marvellous Medicine.

It's quite timely, as we recently read it.

He's not one for keeping costumes on. Masks annoy him and he can't wear them with his glasses, he's not keen on face paint, he gets too hot in costumes, or too cold, or they get in the way when he wants to play.

So we try to aim for reasonably normal clothes and use props.

We are about to make some Marvellous Medicine in an empty plastic bottle (half baby oil, half water coloured with food colouring. Apparently once you swish it about it looks like a galaxy of stars in a bottle, I got it off Pinterest so hopefully it works).

I've printed a label saying Marvellous Medicine, and printed a picture from the book, of George mixing the medicine, and typed George underneath it so DS can wear it like a badge and people will know who he is.

And I've made this. It's the shrunken Grandma from the story, for DS to carry.

But, you could easily make something similar by printing off a picture of grandma and sticking it on cardboard. It doesn't have to be sewn. And if you print a reverse image you could stick it so both sides look like grandma.

YABU, why would you buy a costume? You're overthinking this.

DD is going (not to school as she's HEd) as Arrietty - cotton dress and tights, big cardboard button and a clothes peg in her hair.

Last year she was Dorothy - I cut an old school dress to make a pinafore, red ribbon in her plaits, silver shoes from her dressing up box

Game that grandma is fantastic!

I am crap at sewing, but I was proud a couple of years ago when I drew on thick card the characters from Room on the Broom and stuck them on a broomstick. Made a hobby horse for DS in the same way as he was the highway rat.

Totally agree yanbu op. I used face paints sometimes instead, as kids did not want to dress up and I dont have time, skill or energy to create costume. Neighbour bought a black cloak that could be used for everything. Completely rediculous, not just the expense but also the pressure on parents. Other times I just threw money at it, e.g. Tiger tail, hat and gloves from elc was £10 for tiger who came to tea. Thank goodness now in secondary so this nonsense is over.

DC 1 = Ada Goth a rehash of her victorian day outfit.
DC 2 = Matilda a blue dress she already has
Last year. The Worst Witch in the school (school blouse & pinafore, stripey tights, my witches hat and DH tie. Carried a toy cat). Also Bobbie from the Railway Children. A pinafore dress, the blouse from Victorian day, the pinny from victorian day my beret and a red flag from her train stuff.

flora717 · 04/03/2015 18:35

Oo. Accessories. DC 1 can have my umbrella and DC2 can take a few 'classic' books.

Sophie (BFG) wears a pink dress.
The Magic Finger 'girl' wears a long sleeve top (blue) and jeans.
Or Jacqueline Wilson? Suitcase Kid. (Just need a suitcase). Lots of characters in modern everyday clothes in her books.

DS2 is wearing his bear onesie and going as Baloo in The Jungle Book. last year he went as a stormtrooper from Star Wars and took his annual in.

Nightingalemumoftwo · 04/03/2015 19:28

Great suggestions but my ds2 (6) is only starting to enjoy books, has some SN and stuff like Harry Potter is still beyond his reach. After explaining that we can't build a Gruffalo costume from scratch, he seems content with the idea of going as Tiger from the Jungle Book! I must admit I look forward to not having to magic costumes in a couple of years!
