A parking WWYD

The office where I work is on a business park. We have parking spaces allocated to our office, which we pay for, as do the other businesses for theirs.

Mid morning a car parks in the corner of our far car park and two guys get out. They were dressed for walking and carrying poles. Off they walk past our office and into the distance towards the path where the train line used to be.

This is literally ten mins after I've asked reception to send an email to remind everyone to park courteously - several numpties have parked really badly rendering a number of spaces unusable and we've got some big meetings going on so have more visitors than usual.

My boss (who is usually very forthright about such things) didn't think we should do anything about our extra visitors, 'What harm are they doing?' and also said asking these guys not to park on our car park could result in negative publicity for the company!

I was thinking of leaving a polite note on the windscreen informing them it's a private car park and asking them not to park there again. I didn't though.

So, WWYD in those circumstances?

Are there notices up clearly stating that it is a private car park and must only be used by staff/permit holders?

I don't know the legalities regarding parking on private land.

I imagine that unless you impose penalties such as wheel clamping or the dreaded private eye type fines then people may continue park there.

Honestly? I'd have a long, hard think about why something so minor and trivial was consuming my thoughts enough to post on a message board at ten at night.

Follow your boss's lead and don't sweat the small stuff.

Feckeggblue · 03/03/2015 22:15

I'd put a notice up as they probably don't realise but there isn't much you can do really

As far as I am aware, this is a total one off. Each space has a company nameplate on the front kerb. We're not even particularly close to where we think these two guys went walking.

It will be funny if they were trying a walk out and next week the whole senior ramblers' association turns up en masse!

Actually mrssmith I hadn't thought about it until I sat down this evening as I've had a busy day. If it was someone's drive would you say the same?

I am responsible for the car parking arrangements at my work ( ish) . YABU, hth.

ThingummyJigg · 03/03/2015 22:20

Stay out of it.

Unless you're the car park attendant in which case, clamp them.

Deal with the 40,000 ramblers when they show up.

Seriouslyffs · 03/03/2015 22:21

Can you park? Is it your responsibility?
Let it go!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 03/03/2015 22:21

I'd get on with my job, stop trying to guess where they were going and probably not think a lot more about it.

mrssmith79 · 03/03/2015 22:28

It's not though, is it? It's a works car park, and you don't control it or own it. I'm not trying to be sarcastic - it's just that in the grand scheme of things, it's a non-issue and should be dismissed as such.

I used to run a pub. Unbeknownst to me a local walking club decided to use our car park as their starting point for a four hour walk. They completely jammed up all the spaces during a normally busy Sunday lunch session. When their walk finished they mostly got in their cars and fecked off. We sold them a couple of soft drinks and lost loads of regular custom.
I would leave a polite note.
