...to repair my coat

The part where the sleeve meets the shoulder (the armpit) is ripped after a few years of wear. It's a wool coat and I'm too fond of it too tight to replace it.

Does anyone have any skills to explain how the hell to do this by myself? Am I being overly ambitious (my sum talent is sewing on buttons, a straight line on a sewing machine and hole repairs in trousers etc. I just know if I go to the dry cleaner or sewing shop or whatever it will be a silly number. Can't bear to throw it away.

Shamelessly bumping for the sewers out there (ok as soon as I typed that I realised the word has to be seamstress or it leads to confusion!)

Have you asked in a dry cleaners? They may be able to do it for you for about 5 quid. Worth asking.

When you turn the coat inside out, you'll probably see a corresponding seam in the lining. If you unpick that, you should be able to get to the inside of the outer fabric and be able to sew it from there. It shouldn't be too hard.

Could you post pics of it? The outside and turned inside our?

Since it's in the armpit, you can probably give it a go yourself - it will be hidden when you're wearing it. If you go to a fabric shop / habadashery, they should be able to advise you on what to use to sew it (color and thickness of thread, basically), and they may be able to show you roughly what you need to do.

I reckon you could do it. Take it to a sewing/fabric shop as PP suggested, and ask their advice. If it has frayed or pulled along the area where it's come apart, you might need to reinforce it a bit to stop it happening again and wasting your efforts

There is usually an 'access seam' on the lining, usually on the arm. Turn the whole coat inside out and have a look, and unpick this to give you access to the seam thats come undone

I've just turned my wool coat inside out to see if I can take a pic of it and have noticed 4 seams coming undone `Shock

Also to add..... my coat has an pleat at the back and the lining isn't attached here for about 12" along the bottom at the back (never noticed this before)

So it may be lucky and not have to unpick
