World book day, nothing other than a book workshop ..whatever that is? Is it just another guise for selling bookks added on to the already existing book club? On the the 13th is Red Nose Day of course, they.aren't doing anything they sold red noses last week , they ran out with no plans for more....AIBU to feel its a bit ..well ..boring?

Our school is not doing world book day, as in dressing up, which to be honest I am quite happy about. Both my Dss hate dressing up and when they did it last time, all boys came in Superhero costumes while mine were actually real book characters...no I am happy not to do it!

They are doing a non-uniform day 13 march, dress in pink or red for £1 donation.

Agree with the book selling though, totally over prised books luring the kids in to make the parents buy them

HighwayDragon · 03/03/2015 11:15

Join the pta and organise something?

MrsPeterQuill · 03/03/2015 11:19

YABU!! I'd bloody love that. I got a bit fed up of our school having a dress up day practically every other week. And shop bought costumes weren't allowed, it had to be home made.

Luckily, the new head has calmed it down a bit but it's still a PITA. I'd be quite happy to just donate the money or have non uniform (with no specified colours or items).

Ours never do anything for World Book Day or Red Nose Day. Usually mufti days are restricted to school fundraising events.
Plenty of dress up days related to their learning topics though Hmm

DoJo · 03/03/2015 11:30

Not everyone can afford to keep shelling out for these kinds of events - perhaps the school are trying to ensure that parents aren't overstretched.

WipsGlitter · 03/03/2015 11:31

I am so glad ours isn't doing anything for world book day!! At least nothing to do with costumes. DS1 is pestering for a red nose but they also ran out last year so hope they have enough this year!

froomeonthebroom · 03/03/2015 11:31

Have you offered to organise anything for book day? Ordered some more red noses to sell?

Thought not.

froomeonthebroom · 03/03/2015 11:36

Actually this kind of thinking really boils my piss. School is there to educate your child. If you want them to raise funds for comic relief or anything else then get off your bum and speak to the head and ask if you can organise something.

YABU

ShatnersBassoon · 03/03/2015 11:36

YABU. Making (often expensive) costumes for one-off events is far more boring than a book workshop.

Sort out your own activities at home if you think these days need to be marked in a more elaborate way.

EponasWildDaughter · 03/03/2015 11:37

Oh please may this be the start of the end of all this dressing up and coughing up money for stuff every other bloody week!

When you've got more than one DC in primary school it gets way too much.

ChoochiWhoo · 03/03/2015 11:39

Homemade costumes only? That IS crazy surely a non uniform day or something ? Just seems a shame kids like to take part in these kinds of things, My DS was Looking forward to going dressed up bless him,

Put the buns down ....and chill yer boots. ..tis a lighthearted thread

SuburbanRhonda · 03/03/2015 11:44

Why would your DS have thought he would be dressing up if the school doesn't do dressing up for WBD?

thegreylady · 03/03/2015 11:44

Yesterday they had a 'dress up day' and when KS1 came out it looked like a pre prep version of Hogwarts. Sainsbury's was selling little Harry Potter outfits, cape, tie, specs and wand and a felt 'spell book'. There were at least 6 filing out in line, they looked very sweet (including dgs).

ChoochiWhoo · 03/03/2015 11:44

His old school did Surburban

And shop bought costumes weren't allowed, it had to be home made.

WHAT? How ridiculous. Firstly you need to buy the materials or have them available, and secondly you have to have the skills (and possibly a sewing machine) to make the costume. Did parents actually go along with this unreasonable stipulation? And come to that, the teachers too, if they had to dress up too?

I'd have bought the costume. Or kept my son off school.

froomeonthebroom · 03/03/2015 12:05

You may think it's lighthearted, but as a PTA member I am sick of parents asking when such and such will be done when they obviously have no intention of helping out.

MythicalKings · 03/03/2015 12:09

I used to love world book day when I was teaching. The DCs and parents went all out to be characters from books and it was lovely.

DNiece tells me that it's all Disney and "film" costumes bought at supermarkets now.

That's really sad. Not in the spirit of world book day at all.

Middlerose · 03/03/2015 12:15

Are you a qualified teacher OP?

ouryve · 03/03/2015 12:17

I'd be glad of this. Endless dressing up days and constant events, inschool time, are quite unsettling for kids who just need some routine.

OTheHugeManatee · 03/03/2015 12:29

They're teachers, not party planners Hmm

maninawomansworld · 03/03/2015 13:10

YABVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVU!!

Most parents would kill for a 'boring' school that didn't keep asking us to dig in our pockets for this , that or the other, or keep insisting on bloody dressing up days etc...

Where is this 'boring school'? I might sign my two up!

wigglesrock · 03/03/2015 13:17

My daughters primary school is having a few podcasts for the older ones and the KS1 kids (P1 - P3) are bringing in their favourite bedtime book and a dressing gown or pjs to put over their uniform to encourage bedtime reading for World Book Day - I'm delighted. I quake when I read some of the WBD costume stress.
