To be concerned about DD's nursery?

My DD's nursery is great - she only goes once a week, but gets along well with her keyworker and, other than a bit of separation anxiety when I drop her off, seems fine.

However, she doesn't take any formula at all while she's there (she's 11 months though, so might be weaning herself off it) and out of the last five times she's been there, I got called at work four times to let me know that she's bumped her head. Each time, she's had a bruise, but this last time it was huge (the size of her fist) and she had a massive bump!

She's pretty clumsy generally and is pulling herself up, so I can understand why she falls etc. but is this too often to be bashing her head at nursery? Am I being PFB?

Not trying to blame the nursery or anything - a genuine question! Just thinking if she needs one to one care.

I wouldn't worry too much about the formula. My 14 month old has never wanted her bottle whilst at nursery despite me providing one and I know they offer it. As long as she has water to keep hydrated I wouldn't worry as its only once a week. We've also had plenty of accident reports! As long as they can document what happens I'm not too concerned... However if you feel that there isn't enough supervision I would speak to the nursery manager. And I don't think you're being PFB, it's natural to be constantly worried (it's it Wink)

My son was 12 months when he started nursery and if he'd bumped his head 4 out of 5 times he'd been there I would have been a little bit unimpressed, TBH. All children have accidents, but perhaps they need to be a bit more vigilant with your daughter at the moment!

The formula thing I wouldn't worry too much about - does she have any before/after nursery?

Cliffdiver · 03/03/2015 08:06

I would be worried if 4 out of 5 times my DD had hurt herself at nursery.

I understand nurseries can't constantly monitor exactly what every child is doing all the time, but I would have thought after the second time she bumped her head they would have monitored her closely.

Do the nursery have a soft play area? If so I would ask them to encourage your DD to play there until she's more stable on her feet.

However, if you do want her to have 1:1 care, this isn't something a nursery can offer and I would recommend you consider hiring a nanny.

The formula wouldn't concern me as long as she's getting enough food/drink otherwise, and nappies would soon be an indicator of that.

The bumps... Well 4/5 times sounds a lot. But your Dd does only go once a week. If you said 4 out of 5 days straight I'd definitely be raising supervision as a concern.

However, there is no harm in asking for further clarification on how they are happening. Is it that she's such a busy baby she's trying to over reach herself, is she being adequately supervised - how many other tots of a similar age are there and are they in a 'baby' room or mixed with older children.

Mine had a couple of weeks when learning to walk when we were receiving an accident form every day. It turns out that the shoes were a little bit lose!

Sounds pretty normal to me. I get contacted all the time about head bumps, in fact my car is swimming in paperwork. They will ring at the slightest little thing as policy, at home you'd never give it a second thought.

And their eating habits are often different at Creche, either it's too exciting to waste time drinking formula, or I want the never eaten at home fruit cos everyone else is eating it Smile

Im a bit on the fence with this one. The formula I wouldn't worry about and the bumps to the head, well in my experience 11mth olds tend to bump themselves a lot, coordination is a bit hit and miss with them. Its a good thing that they ring you.

My ds goes to nursery, he is 12 months. Until recently he was bumping his head nearly every time he went because he was so daring but not steady on his feet yet.

They would count it as a bump even if he bumped his head on something soft though.
