to think the police should have come round by now

SIL is an extremely vulnerablee person in the community (MH issues). She has been the victim of an vile con artist, who has extorted in excess of £2,000 from her, has come to her house and stayed (we didn't realise what was going on) and disappeared in the night, taking her iphone, ipad and credit card, which he used to withdraw £300 before the cc company stopped it. He's now sending her threatening messages and trying to get more cash out of her.

We have a good idea where he might have gone and an address for the police. I rang them yesterday morning to report it, they were supposed to come round yesterday afternoon. I waited in for 4 hours for them. They rang half an hour after the slot had finished to apologise and say they got called away, ok, but that they made it a policy to respond within 24 hours and would see us asap. Rearranged to today - 12-3. Rang at 2.30 just to check, they're busy, they have no idea when anyone can come and they "hope" it will be today.

I understand that they are a massively overstretched resource, and fair enough that genuine emergencies should be given priority. But this is an extremely vulnerable person and they stand a chance of apprehending a criminal if they'd just come round and get the information. I've even pre-written a statement for them, just so they have all the info.

We also can't do anything without a crime number, so can't get the money refunded on the cc or sort out insurance.

We are not in an area of particularly high crime AFAIK.

OTOH, I rang the police last week (sounds like I ring them all the time but this was the second and third times I've ever called them!) because in our area unsafe parking is dealt with by the police. They came out within an hour.

Should I have originally rung 999? I rang the non-emergency number because there was no-one in immediate danger, but it feels now as though that pushes you to the bottom of the heap.

Is there a reason you couldn't call in to the station with the information? That might quicker than waiting for them to have time to make a home visit.

Ring adult social care and raise a safeguard for the theft. They'll ask if you've contacted the police, provide them with the reference number from the police

Unfortunately there aren't enough police to respond to emergencies and go round taking general statements

Can you go in to the local station? We did that after a car accident when the other driver didn't leave details. This was before the non emergency phone line though.
We spoke to the police officer on the desk and got seen very quickly by another officer who took full details.
Don't know if that is an option now though.

Its Unusual not to be given a crime number as soon as you report it tbh.
As the crime has been logged (although you haven't actually spoken to the police yet) you should be able to request the crime number so phone back.

The last crime we reported (ongoing investigation) it took them over a week to come out for statements even though we were told due to the nature of the crime it would be dealt with quickly. It was nearly 1 month before official statements given and the whole thing has progressed very slowly, we have been kind of left in limbo for the last six months and haven't a clue what's going on.

So even if you hand this blokes arse to them on a plate, do not assume that things will move quickly to catch this him. Of course every police force is different but what you think is of number one importance in terms of investigating, could well be number 10 on their list.

You could go down to the station and report in in person then you might get to speak to someone there.

The local police station is at the bottom of our road but no longer has a counter open to the public. The manned station is 15 miles away. OH is at work all day with our car and SIL doesn't drive. Plus I'm not dragging the children there.

Just on hold to them again to find out the latest. This guy has already identified his next victim, according to what he said to SIL. Surely better to try and stop him.

Theresacat - I did ask for a crime reference number, they have given me a short reference but the police dispatcher I spoke to said they wouldn't give a crime number until statement had been taken. Just got off the phone, they are trying for some time before 7, but no guarantees.

The point is that this is a vulnerable person who is frightened in her own home and is being threatened. She needs help from the police.

Ohflippity - I've rung her MH team. Thanks

Sorry I think YABU. They have to prioritise actual emergencies to save lives first. They can't really plan around them.
