External garage door got caught by the wind yesterday and is completely buggered and needs replaced. Called home insurance this morning, straight through to claims dept, 5 minutes later they've given me the details of company who will be in touch to repair. After reading lots of insurance horror stories Aibu to think this is too easy to be true?

Just go with it.

The first time I had to make a car insurance claim (not at fault) I was shocked at how easy my insurance company made it. I dropped the car off at the repairer, they had a taxi waiting which took me to the hire car company where I picked up a vehicle, drove it while the car was being repaired, then when I took it back they had the taxi waiting to take me to back to the repairer. I've had two other claims with the company (one car, one home (flood) related and they were simple and hassle free. So easy, and that's why I've stayed with the same company for years. It's not worth the small saving to risk a company which doesn't provide the same level of service.

Purplepoodle · 02/03/2015 10:42

Nope any house insurance claim has been very straightforward

Dowser · 02/03/2015 11:00

When my car got totalled I rang my insurance company who were brilliant. The assessor even found me my next car.

EponasWildDaughter · 02/03/2015 11:06

I think it depends on what you are trying to claim for (and maybe how many times you've claimed in the past).

A good friend of mine makes sure she claims on her house ins. at least once a year 'to get her money's worth'. If no real accident has happened, she'll fake one.

One year the fake one was something involving water coming through the ceiling and the TV. There was a tense few days when the ins. co. said they'd have to come out and have a look.

Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 02/03/2015 11:09

Epona - is her premium not through the roof? Actually hearing that makes me really angry, people like her are why insurance costs are rising for all of us, even those of us who have never made a claim in 10+ years.

EponasWildDaughter · 02/03/2015 11:13

I agree absolutely Ali. I cant tell you about the ins and outs of it as i've never gone into it with her, as it does irritate me. 'Tis true though. They had to actually ruin a perfectly good ceiling Hmm

17 years a homeowner and never claimed once. We've had floods in the kitchen, leaky roof, cracked windows. I just always thought It'd affect premiums. And usually is been quicker to sort ourselves.

My dad has been in his house over 60 years. Never claimed on his insurance. He had a leaky roof about 7 years ago due to storms and it took 8 months of arguing before they agreed he was coveted and paid for repairs.

TooManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 02/03/2015 11:29

I've damaged two garage doors and never thought of claiming on our insurance. It was quick and cheap to fix both times so it might be worth checking in case your excess is more than a repair. Your premium will also go up if you claim.

partialderivative · 02/03/2015 11:34

EponasWildDaughter, your good friend sounds like a scum bag.

I really hope she gets caught.

Andrewofgg · 02/03/2015 11:35

Damaged my car and it was my fault. Car picked up two hours later; driver took me with him to the repairers where my loan car was waiting.

Repairs done on time and no nonsense at any stage. It was LV.

Stinkle · 02/03/2015 11:36

In 13 years we've only claimed once and the insurance company wanted to come out and look.

I dropped a tin of gloss paint down the stairs when painting the banisters. It bounced on every step before exploding in the hallway covering the hall carpet, downstairs loo, living room and front doors, a good chunk of living room carpet and splattered all over the TV unit and TV. I couldn't believe how far it went (except the stairs as I'd covered them).

I suppose it's one of those Hmm claims and they wanted to check I wasn't trying it on.

ginmakesitallok · 02/03/2015 18:44

Apparently we'll lose our no claims for a year, so only an extra £40 or so. Door can't be repaired, needs replaced. It was a good quality door, so likely to cost at least £600 to get replaced. We've got a £100 excess, so definitely worth claiming.

Good to hear it might be nice and straightforward.

Oh and the woman did check wind speeds in the area at the time, apparently average of 60 mph.

Claimed on car insurance twice and both times my car had been cleared and collected within 2 hours and I was provided with a hire car at the same time. I have claimed on house insurance once when our washing machine flooded the floor and as the kitchen and front room were essentially one room it was an expensive replacement job! That took forever though

Marylou2 · 02/03/2015 19:08

Only claimed on my house insurance once.I lost my keys, all my own fault.Barclays sent a locksmith who changed all the locks and they didn't increase my premium. I think we're just used to bad service so we're shocked when anyone just does what we pay for and doesn't treat us badly.

DancingHat · 02/03/2015 20:44

I had a £30k+ home insurance claim about 5 years ago and this year my premium was £130 buildings and contents. The premiums stayed the same for a few years then went down again. I will never pay in premiums what that claim cost probably in all my years of getting insurance even if I never claim again. But dear me it was 8 months of hell getting the insurance company to get its act together. I get it was a cold spell with lots of other claims but no one even came to take the floors up for 6 weeks so more of the house went mouldy and was damaged than ever needed to be. Two dehumidifiers for the whole open plan downstairs was a drop in the ocean compared with what it needed. Then I had to project manage every little bit of the work including fixing screw ups. But I did get lovely new floors and lovely new furniture so I am better off than I was before, just wiser for it!

Car insurance also a joke. Drove car through flood water and car stopped. Pushed it onto a dry area of high ground and hitched a lift home. Phoned insurance company next day who arranged for a tow truck to a garage 40 miles away (!). Called the day after to see whether it had been assessed. Insurance company seemed clueless about the claim and called the garage to see. Called me back to say it had been written off. I asked for the garage report and they started asking me questions they should have been asking the garage. So I called the garage directly who asked how high the water had come in the car? Well they had the car and should have seen it was dry! I also told them it had started and been driven onto the tow truck. They seemed surprised. Called me back in 5 minutes to say the car was ready to be picked up the next day. From being written off to roadworthy in under 30 minutes. And because I didn't realise my insurance only covered me if the car was repairable not written off I nearly didn't have a car for goodness knows how many weeks till I got a cheque. I live rurally and being carless is not an option. So now I read the small print. Bunch of jokers.

If you've had a good experience brilliant! That's the ying to my shitty yang! Grin I think I have copped everyone's bad luck. Having said that my in laws are experiencing a long drawn out claim on their home insurance for a leaky roof. It's nearly been a year and absolutely no work has been done to repair the leak. So it's still dripping down the inside of their wall cavities, rotting from the inside out.

oldcroneat39 · 02/03/2015 21:55

Noone's likely to post "my insurance company just did what I pay my premium for", it's not that newsworthy.
My mum's insurance paid out on lost rings without question, even though she had only recently had them revalued and doubled the insurance on them. She was shocked. Then a month later she found them, so she sent back the payment. They were shocked. But I doubt it's ever hit any news.
