...to think I'm starting a name thread.

But I just came across a website with a photo of a child's bedroom with the name in wooden letters on the wall....

Ellyot.

No. Please, not. Surely not one could possibly ever call their child this name. I would normally stay away from the naming forum, and I don't normally get involved in naming debates. But surely there is not possible way anyone thought this was a suitable form of name for a child?

Something about this post is not very nice. The child will be indentifiable and that's not fair.
General discussions on names are fine - best kept on the name boards though - but this is specific.

Totality22 · 28/02/2015 13:37

Compared to some of the shit that's out there, it's not the worst? It's just a chav variation of Elliot?

MidniteScribbler · 28/02/2015 13:40

The child will be indentifiable and that's not fair.

The parent chose to put their child's bedroom on the internet.

But surely the name is out on the public domain if Midnite has seen it on a website? So being identifiable is a bit of a red herring?
I wonder if it's pronounced the same as the traditional way?

engeika · 28/02/2015 13:44

OK fair enough - just seems a bit low and mean to me.

engeika · 28/02/2015 13:46

I suspect it is a Rightmove type site and the parent probably didn't think about it when the EA was taking pics.

That's what I was trying to say Derek - it didn't feel right

Pintrest site actually Engeika. Photographed for a 'how you can make your bedroom look this awesome' style shoot.

I work in a primary school in a very deprived area and some of the children's names are very unusual and spelled differently to what you would normally expect. Because of the high number of EAL pupils a lot of the names are probably considered common in their native land, just sound a bit weird to us. After a while you forget about a child's "odd" name and just see the person. I think people being snobby about names and their spelling are a bit dickish to be honest.

MishMooshAndMogwai · 28/02/2015 14:05

YABU but I'm exactly the same. I work with a little boy called Mawgan and it just makes me wince.

I'm perfectly willing to accept that this reaction to a name is unreasonable and mean but it makes me think his parents are twats.

silverstreak · 28/02/2015 14:15

mish Mawgan is actually a proper spelling where I live (Cornwall) so not at all wince-worthy.....

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 28/02/2015 14:17

I don't care how unreasonable it is, Uooneek names go through me. If you want an Elliot, have one. Don't give your kid a life time of 'that's Elliot with a y'. This is coming from experience of living with a pain in the arse name.

MishMooshAndMogwai · 28/02/2015 14:19

That's fair enough silver, I was expecting someone to say something along those lines. Unfortunately 'unique' spellings aren't uncommon round here and still make me wince.

Most unique spellings are probably a legit spelling somewhere

Nancy66 · 28/02/2015 14:22

I don't have an issue with unusual names or 'made up' names. But taking a traditional name and blatantly misspelling it I just don't get. It makes the parents (and by association the child) look thick.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 28/02/2015 14:32

There is a photographer whose surname is Ellyot but I've never seen it spelt that way as a first name. I've seen my own name spelt a completely odd way but fuck it no harm done to anyone

silverstreak · 28/02/2015 14:38

Too true mish, & tbh I totally agree with the wider sentiment - just not that name in particular (& even then would've completely agreed before we moved here)...! It might be perceived as mean to mock someone's "uneek" name spelling but the fact is a lot of people Will draw unfavourable conclusions re the parents intellect if the spelling is changed to a simpler phonetic version - just as they would if they 'misspelt' any other word, as it just looks like they can't spell....

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/02/2015 14:48

You know what these trailblazers have done for us? Every time I ask someone to spell their name because I forgot what they were called and I get, "B O B" with a withering look, I can say, "I know but some people spell my name with a Y", and not look rude or stupid.

Thanks to all those who spell names outside the norm. I salute you. [flower]

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/02/2015 14:49

Flowers rather!
