To think this is too good to be true?

OK in the grand scheme of things for our family it has been planned that when our 3rd child starts school in December I would either go backing uni full time (now discounted due to not being financially viable for us) or to get a day time normal job (I currently waitress 3-4 nights a week including every fri and sat which is a strain as we never get quality family time, can't go visit family for the weekend, go on long days out as I have to be back for work etx)
So in my head I would ideally want a part time job term time, flexible around sports day/plays etc, short commute, able to work from home of a child was sick etc. I could then study open university or just do professional qualiicatons as dont need a degree it just means you are exempt from some exams.
Jobs like this are rarer than unicorn poo, especially in rural areas as opposed to big city

A friend of mine who is very highly qualified in what I want to do is now starting her own firm in September and today practically offered me a job - with EXaCTLY the requirements I was hoping for as above!!!!
Sounds too good to be true so need a dose of reality and some advice on what I need to consider when disusson this further with her

I feel it may make things awkard if she wants to fire me (although employers love me and I've never even sacked so far)
I'm worried she thinks I am more qualified/able/knowledgable than I really am

Sounds good. You need to be able to separate work you from home you in order to remember she's the boss but that's do-able.

There are lots of possible downfalls, the business could fail (as a very high % of start ups do) you could hate working with your friend or you might turn out to be rubbish at the job!

However, as you're not really giving anything up, you have nothing to lose. If you had an almost perfect job you would have to leave, that would be different, but as you don't I'd say go for it.

What's where I'm at I think, if it all goes wrong then I'm confident that my current work would have me back in a shot (I left when I had dc3 and they were constantly begging me to go back so I did after a year) or I'm just back to where I am now in looking for a basic admin type job.
I could be rubbish at the job which is why I want to sit down and go through everything with her properly
I won't know if I will get on with her or not in an official capacity until I've jumped in
Also does anyone have any pointers on what she would new to think about? Just so I can say have you thought about a b and c? And I know both of us have thought about all aspects

Can you ask to do a couple of weeks as a trial?

hamptoncourt · 27/02/2015 18:45

Just do it - what do you have to lose?

best of luck
