I need some help. My (wilful) 6 year old has been peeing blood and been diagnosed with a water infection. She has been prescribed co-amoxyclav and hates the taste. We had the mother of all stand off's last night and this morning to get her to take it. This afternoon I've tried mixing with yoghurt when she got home, but she realised and is currently sat dicking around eating it tiny bit by tiny bit.

So please - educate me in your dark arts of getting children to take their medicine. One of us will not last the 7 day course we've been given.

Cheers!

Bribery with smarties.

Yes, bribery with chocolate is the only thing that got Metronizadol (which I don't think I can spell) into DS2. Refusal to take it was not an option.

Well, bribery and the threat of him going back to hospital for them to stick a needle in his arm again!

Poor DD Sad

Is she drinking plenty of fluid (for the UTI) ?

My DS had to have 5 days of anti-virals 5 a day (and they were vile) I gave him a spoonful of ice-cream "to numb your throat" and a second spoonful to sluice it down.
I tried giving him a drink but the tablet just stuck in his throat.

It is a battle of wills !

If you can mix it in yoghury, could you mix it in chocolate mousse or a rolo yoghurt?

Somehow, don't ask me how, putting it in milk and drinking with two curly straws helped. That coupled with bribery.

I ask for tablets now, they manage these fine. Both of mine prefer this to the disgusting tastes and textures of suspensions.
Before that, complete unabashed bribery. A line of minstrels or skittles or tic tacs and a drink on standby.

medicine syringe. Box of matchmakers.
It's not big, clever or good parenting but one minty matchmaker for each mL of medicine seems to do it.
You have to follow the medicine down through so they can't speak in between, kind of a perpetual motion thing, squeezing syringe with one hand while sliding matchmaker in with the other, letting them chew briefly so you don't stab them in the throat with the chocolate.

I bribe too, sweets in one hand medicine in the other. They have to take all the medicine first. Dd2 was partial to a glass of coke afterwards.

When ds wont take his medicine, i mix it into either hot chocolate or coke which he then snorts

Beyond: probably not best to put antibiotics into hot drinks as they are not necessarily thermostable outwith ambient/body temperature.

Is yoghurt/milk ok with the anitbi's?

I'm older so I just went straight in with the big guns.
1 pack of pokemon cards and a cornetto.
A bonus of a rowntree winder if no tears.

We mixed dd2's into something not unlike a fruit shoot. The harm (??) Done by a fruit shoot is more than outweighed by the benefit of the antibiotic.

It's time for tough love I'm afraid. She can have a treat once she has had it but nothing until she has had however much she has to take. And if she refuses then she gets nothing, no tv, nothing until it is done.
If she knows she cannot get away with it then she will eventually give in.

You have my sympathies x

Absolutely agree with bribery, something they are not usually allowed preferably! If it really is unbearable then ask the doc/chemist to prescribe something else.

I am also with bribery. We have tried sneaking it into a sleepy DD2, but she just spits it out. Come clean and be prepared with whatever will get it into them.

Bribe her with anything that works. The most important thing is that she takes the medicine.

My mum used to tell us to hold our nose and swallow it quickly. Apparently, you can't taste it if you can't smell it. Dunno but it made us giggle and we took our meds.

Anyway, take it quickly with the chocolate ready to go in as soon as it's down.

Careful, though, with tablets, as not all should be ground..

It's unlikely antibs will be slow release so you should be fine

Jam & yoghurt worked for my tonsillitis medicine at a similar age. Not loads, you can't dilute the taste, you're better off with about 2 mouthfuls.

My ds has type 1 diabetes and sometimes has un sweetened anti biotics which are utterly vomit inducing. With the help of mumsnet we found half a spoon of nutella before the meds, then half a spoon straight after. It kind of coats the mouth and he found it made it all much easier. Good luck!
