to cut down my neighbours for sale sign?

OK so maybe I will maybe I won't we live on a side road with about 4 other houses, we are at one end of the drive. we are up a hill and the road off to our houses runs pretty parallel to the main road just runs up. We have to back down and out and there is a key bit where we have to hope no one is coming (or that they give way or beep or slow down or something)
Anyway guy at the end 6 doors away is selling, EA has put sign outside my house at bottom of drive BUT it obscures the end of the communal driveway so there is now even more of a 'blindspot' where you can't see the road and the cars can't see you backing down.

SO AIBU to chop it down and stick it in his garden fully expecting him to stick it outside his own house.

I'd ring the Estate Agent. Say this sign is causing a problem.
Less effort for you.

QueQuesto · 27/02/2015 11:27

I'd phone the estate agents before taking it into your own hands. Ask if for safety reasons they could swap it for one that sticks on a window like they put on flats.

iklboo · 27/02/2015 11:27

Phone the estate agents & tell them to move it. They're the ones who've put it in the wrong place.

TranquilityofSolitude · 27/02/2015 11:28

I would call the agents and tell them it's a problem. Got to be easier than moving it yourself!

MarthaCostello · 27/02/2015 11:29

Is it on your property? If so, they should have asked to put up there, and I'm sure you would be well within your rights to remove it and return it to him undamaged. If it isn't on your property, then I think you would be unreasonable to chop it down, why not just go and speak to him and explain that it is obscuring your view and making it more dangerous to pull out? If he doesn't agree to remove it then you could contact the estate agent directly.

Is the house for sale in the side road or in the main road? If it's in the side road presumably they want the sign visible from the main road, otherwise only current residents would see it. But obviously they need yo find a solution that doesn't compromise people's safety!

marmaladegranny · 27/02/2015 11:29

You can't damage someone else's (the EA's) property! Why not phone the EA and explain the problem and give them the chance to re-site it?

Pangurban · 27/02/2015 11:32

Can you dig it up if they won't move it?

Clarinet9 · 27/02/2015 11:36

Sign is on council fence! house is on side road, guy definitely won't agree to move it he is a twonk, and has been trying to force my other neighbour to move for about 6 months so we will be having a street party when he goes!
He kind of hates children and everyone else has lots of noisy ones!

I am expcting EA to faff about doing nothing since it is the weekend but I will ring them tomorrow!

WorraLiberty · 27/02/2015 11:38

Ring them today so they have more notice

Pangurban · 27/02/2015 11:41

Maybe ring the council, following up by email stating that the sign stuck to their fence is obstructing the sightline and is dangerous. Ask them if they're responsible.

Pangurban · 27/02/2015 11:42

If the EA is nailing the sign to the council fence, are they not damaging council property?

APlaceInTheWinter · 27/02/2015 11:44

You could also try ringing the council roads' department if it's obscuring visibility. Ask for their advice.
Then when you ring the EA you can mention you've already spoken to the roads' department about it and they may be more inclined to listen to you.

BolshierAyraStark · 27/02/2015 11:45

Why wait til tomorrow? Ring them today.

Clarinet9 · 27/02/2015 11:46

Sorry worra didn't say because it wasn't hugely relevant am overseas ATM so it is late here. I was tempted to ring as I type but I am sure mobile will be off! I will save the late night phone calls for when they don't move it!! Grin

like the council idea and pointing out it is dangerous
even though it is up the hill there are other places the sign can go, it could even go on the flat across the road with an arrow

Mamafratelli · 27/02/2015 11:59

Can you reverse onto your drive then drive off it? Still call the estate agent too.

Clarinet9 · 27/02/2015 12:03

No mama the hill is too steep!

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 27/02/2015 12:07

ring them up sooner rather than later as they probably outsource the signage (they do round here anyway) and it will take maybe a week for them to come out.

When we were up for sale, we had to have them come out a fair few times as it kept blowing down.

Lolipoplady · 27/02/2015 13:05

Contact the estate agent - they (or the people they outsource the signage to) are obliged to ensure that the sign does not obstruct visibility. It might take a few days for the signage company's van to get round to you, but they almost certainly will move it if you inform them of the problem. They have to! I'd do that rather than speak to the owner of the house if he isn't friendly.

bilbodog · 27/02/2015 13:16

just ring the estate agent - they will need to contact the people who put up their boards and explain it to them They wont have realised when they put it up that it is causing a problem. I am quite sure they will move it asap.

Unexpected · 27/02/2015 13:20

Why would cutting it down be your first response? Seems a bit extreme. What ever happened to just asking the agent to move the sign? Save the wood chopping for later if nothing happens.

maninawomansworld · 27/02/2015 14:22

As annoying as the sign is, this guy sounds like a pain so why not just let it be?
Presumably the sign has been put where it is because it is nice and prominent and will attract potential buyers Surely you want him to sell quickly so you're shot of him?

Vycount · 27/02/2015 16:59

If you can drive up a hill forwards, you should also be able to reverse up it. That sounds like the safest option regardless of EA signs.
