To ask if this sounds like good progress.

My DS is 7+2 months and has moderate learning difficulties. He has a statement which provides him with a 1:1 TA for some of his school day and has SALT. He couldn't string a sentence together til he started school possibly due to glue ear problems he had. He knew nothing at all about letters, reading etc when he started school but had made lots and lots of progress since then.

Yesterday he came home with a stage 4 reading book saying that he had been moved up and he actually did a pretty good job reading it.

My DD is nearly 11 and is dyslexic so not a fantastic reader either but I can't remember when she was on this sort of level.

AIBU to ask if this sounds like a reasonable level of reading for a child in year 2. I'm not talking in terms of the wonderful readers or even the average ones but is he even close. Every time I go to parents evening I think they are going to say how well he is doing too but all they say is how far behind he is which is obvious with his SN.

hes making progress. therefore doing well. ok he may not be at the same level as the other children but his teacher cant expect him to be. just keep doing what you are doing. you seem to have it in hand. be proud of him that he has moved up a level.
well done OPs DS Smile

My just turned 7 year old foster child is also on Stage 4 (of the Oxford Reading Tree). He is not statemented though is in the lower ability group in his class. His teacher is thrilled with his progress, and I think there are 1 or 2 children still on Stage 3 in the class. So I would say that for a child with a statement to be on Stage 4 and managing the books quite well is really good progress.

My GS was about the same last year at the same age. He has progressed really well in the last year, he seemed to suddenly take off last Easter and after lots of struggling he seemed to do well on level 4. He has always had lots of positive feedback, his teachers last year and this year are always saying how well he is doing. I think it is a shame if teachers are focusing on how far behind you son is rather than how far he has come.

I think alot of boys switch on at around 7, my youngest son was the same. I think it is great he is doing well on level 4 and he should get lots of praise, I am sure you do praise him and it is so important for him to know you are proud of him.

So he's reading the words now (mostly) I take it (from the doing a good job of it) rather than sounding each and decoding? That's generally a significant leap for reading. He can really start to use those skills for the words that surround him. It's a lovely point in reading.

I am immensely proud of him and he was so pleased with himself too. Small treat at the weekend as I always do for moving up a reading level.

After waiting so long for him to speak, understand etc, things like reading just feel like something he would never do.

It's reassuring to know that other NT children are on a similar level at his age. I'm pretty sure that my DD was only on stage 3/4 at the same age. She is dyslexic which we only found out at the end of year 4 so this was why.
