Absolute arsehole drivers! AIBU to think there should be compulsory 'retests' every 5 years?

To remind them that they need to use their indicators, that they need to wait until the road is clear until they pull out, that they should not jump lanes into the path of another car without any indication that they are going to do so and that Hmm their desire to get home is not more important than almost killing other people/wrecking someone else's car.

Two near misses in the space of 30 seconds with 4 DC in the car. I am fucking raging!

Sometimes I could agree with you bit I like most others don't need the expense piled on top of all our other out goings

DoraGora · 26/02/2015 17:39

Changing lanes is a red herring. A car driver always has the responsibility of not running into the car in front.

Gumnast2014 · 26/02/2015 17:41

Oh god do you drive a white 4x4

rallytog1 · 26/02/2015 17:47

It's not a red herring. Gora. See 253-273 of the Highways Code for example.

2rebecca · 26/02/2015 17:51

They should have to relearn how to turn right as well. I get annoyed with the number of drivers at junctions who won't move far enough to the right side of the road and move forward far enough so traffic going straight on can go round them (assuming road wide enough which it usually is) and they can turn the safer right side to right side with traffic coming from the opposite direction turning right rather than both vehicles trying to cut the corner.

LadyGlen · 26/02/2015 17:51

I'm not sure retesting would make much difference, tbh.
There would be plenty of people who would drive sensibly enough to pass the test and then go back to driving like twats.

Gumnast2014 · 26/02/2015 17:51

I just witnessed a similar situation above

babsmam · 26/02/2015 17:58

And realise that if the obstruction is on your side of the road you give way to the car coming. Looking at you car driver who told me off tonight via gestures.

bigbluestars · 26/02/2015 18:02

Not sure why 5 years.
Insurance companies give huge discounts for no claims status of 10 years or even more- so they must find a low accident level in people driving this long.

Maybe a defensive driving course would help op? And perhaps a chill pill.

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/02/2015 18:04

I wouldn't be massively against it as long as the test itself was at a lower rate than the very first test.

There are a lot of people on the roads who are a danger.

TidyDancer · 26/02/2015 18:16

How would retesting help? It wouldn't make people behave better in every day life. So for that YABU.

WONAR · 26/02/2015 18:21

YANBU re: indicators. Every morning I drive through 3 LARGE roundabouts and 6 junctions on my way to work, and it's shocking just how many drivers seem to forget that their cars have indicators! It becomes a dangerous game on roundabouts as I try to leave a large gap in case I need to brake suddenly (due to swerving/sudden pull-offs with no indication), but not too large because then another impatient commuter will try to pull into it. Cars pull over and don't indicate, just slow down very fast... others turn off suddenly just after a set of traffic lights, so leave the lights then brake sharply without indicating...

Can you tell how enraged this all makes me Angry

partialderivative · 26/02/2015 18:25

I have a UK licence, but I'm not back there that often.

Would I not be able to drive if my '5 years' expired inbetween visits.

I know other countries implement similar regulations, anyone know how it operates?

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/02/2015 18:25

No it possibly wouldn't Tidy, but if a person fails a retest they probably wouldn't be allowed to merrily carry on driving until they actually passed it again.

Cobain · 26/02/2015 18:26

More police cars would be a help, the chances of being pulled over are probably not far from winning the lottery.

MojaveWanderer123 · 26/02/2015 18:30

Surely everyone would drive sensibly on test day. Don't see how making people spend more money and waste time would help their driving tbh. So yabu.

TidyDancer · 26/02/2015 20:24

Mojave, exactly. Alis, you may wheedle out a few shitty drivers that way, but you're more likely to find that the majority of people you're penalising are competent drivers who go to pieces at test time. A test situation will tell you who knows the rules, not who will play by them.

itsnothingoriginal · 26/02/2015 20:46

The more expensive and newer the car, the less they use their indicators it seems Grin

I have these experiences everyday driving on motorways. I've learned to relax about it otherwise I'd end up arriving at work in a right state!

I do think there should be a bit more of a 'campaign' out there to encourage better driving though - it just reflects modern life and how stressed people are all the time Sad

taxi4ballet · 26/02/2015 20:58

It always amazes me that the newest, most expensive cars seem to be fitted with really cheap indicators that just don't work. Very odd, that.

borisgudanov · 26/02/2015 21:52

People in cars are like people anywhere else. The ones that are self-entitled arseholes will be on their best behaviour when their opportunities to behave like arseholes are at risk, and then when they're no longer under scrutiny they can and will behave like, well, arseholes.

More accidents are caused by bad attitudes than by lack of skill IMHO.

tobytomcat88 · 26/02/2015 22:19

My pet HATE is people pulling into your lane and just presuming you will slam on your breaks to let them in. It's my lane I have right of way not you, wait until it's clear with your indicator on!

grrrrr

HarrietSchulenberg · 26/02/2015 22:27

My driving instructor used to say that you should assume that the worst driver on the road is the one behind the car in front Grin . And never to assume that a driver will do what their indicator is indicating.
He was damned right!

MrsGoslingWannabe · 26/02/2015 22:34

I had a bloody police car try and push in front of me earlier - over chevrons! Cheek git, didn't let him though!

Also agree with a pp who said about drivers who don't move over enough at traffic lights when turning right. I have to put up with this every morning and the lights aren't green for long. Today I beeped but one of these days I swear I will just biff 'em! Get some spatial awareness you morons! Angry

StrumpersPlunkett · 26/02/2015 22:39

And I would add about bloody car seats for kids.
I didn't know what to do for the best a few days ago. Two adults I. The front two seats both with kids under school age on their laps. I drove SO carefully so that my actions couldn't possibly result in them ploughing into the back of me. They followed me on small country lanes for about 10 miles.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 26/02/2015 22:42

Can I add the wankers who don't stop when people are waiting to use a zebra crossing.

This gives me daily rage on the school run as I don't drive to the school as it's quicker to walk.
