To think that there's nothing funnier than people falling over?

Inspired by Madonna's fall at last nights Brits. I can't remember the last time I've laughed so much at a live TV event, it was hilarious. Even the reporter on Sky News was trying not laugh whilst talking about it later on in the evening, and myself and my colleagues have been laughing about it all day today.

A few years ago during the bad snowfall we had there was a clip shown on ITV news of a group of people slipping over on the same patch of ice on a pavement. That made me howl as well.

What is it about people falling over that makes it so amusing?

Ice dancing. I can telepathically cause falls.

Salmotrutta · 26/02/2015 21:43

Your mum would have thought my DS falling off his bike and going into mild shock was comic genius then Labrador?

Moln · 26/02/2015 21:44

No I don't laught, like someone up thread said if after the event the person is uninjured I might laugh about the fall with them, but simple can't laugh at someone. I say this without having a falling story of my own, I just don't find potential pain funny.

Have any if the laughers ever fallen and hurt themselves and been laughed at?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 26/02/2015 21:44

fizzy... Now you've taken it to a new level of rudeness. How obnoxious your post is. What would you call a person who takes such offense at a subject so obviously declared in the title... and continues to post on it?

bigbluestars · 26/02/2015 21:44

labradormama- but how do you know which are serious? You must have some amazing medical training to make that on the spot diagnosis of whether a fall is "serious" or not and then laugh accordingly.
Any fall - even the seemingly "minor" ones have potential for injury.

You find that funny?

ashtrayheart · 26/02/2015 21:45

Don't find it funny it all. When watching 'you've been framed' (for the animals and babies with the kids) the falling over ones make me look like this Hmm

ScrambledEggAndToast · 26/02/2015 21:45

My son still laughs hysterically at me falling over on a patch of ice in town. It was a real comedy fall and even I'll admit it was quite funny Grin

fizzycolagurlie · 26/02/2015 21:46

righteous -

Salmotrutta · 26/02/2015 21:46

By the way, I'm with the posters who don't like any falls.

They always make me wince and feel bad for the person.

I fell into the door off a coffee shop, made it worse by farting very loud with the shock! Sorry I even laughed at myselfBlush

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 26/02/2015 21:50

Why are you all posting on this thread? You don't find it funny, you hate seeing falls, the subject is as a clear as crystal...?

Obviously, you can post where you want but why would you? What are you getting out of it exactly? Why not start another thread, the antithesis of this one and congregate there?

Madonna didn't 'fall over' though, she was pulled by her neck down a flight of steps. DH, DD and I were horrified when watching it and it didn't raise as much as a titter. She was fucking amazing to continue on.

I watch YBF for the kiddie and animal funnies. I winch at the falling over ones. I don't find them in the least bit funny.

But Lying the OP is asking if she IBU to think falling over is funny?

So we are replying to that specific question!

Thistledew · 26/02/2015 21:57

I have a theory that it is a hangover from our pre-verbal stage of evolution- that laughing at a fall that doesn't result in any serious injury is a way of signalling to the group that everything is ok.

Jessica147 · 26/02/2015 22:02

People who don't laugh are probably still posting because they are the type who like to feel morally superior. It's all 'I don't laugh because I'm a better person you'. Bollocks to that, I'm just more fun.

Bluetone · 26/02/2015 22:02

My first reaction if I'm with someone or clise to someone who falls is oh are you ok? Then If they laugh I laugh. I wouldn't automatically burst into hysterical laughter until I know they're ok is what I'm saying.

I do like watching YBF though. Although there are a few clips that are obviously very painful. The dc's and I usually shake our heads at those ones and say 'not funny'. Ha

pineappleshortbread · 26/02/2015 22:02

I find it hilarious and to be honest if there is no blood or obviously broken bones I don't even think about whether they hurt themselves as it just too funny sorry.
BTW when I was 11 I said down a muddy hill and hit a tree was laughing for ages after about it and I broke my femur but hey it was funny plus the story changed by time I got back to school to I fell off a cliff and landed in a tree so even better. I have also slipped in sainsburys walked into bus stops lamp posts and bushes and tripped over a kids toy and badly sprained my wrist. All of which were hilarious and I wouldn't care if anyone laughed it's normal.
I always find it funny when others fall.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 26/02/2015 22:04

Snape and Salmotrutta... I get that. I just seems a very great disparity because of the polar opposite opinion.

Some posters are getting very upset (seemingly) at those of us who laugh at ourselves and at others who aren't hurt (or don't appear to be). We're not wrong and they're not wrong but it feels like posting on eggshells around those of you who don't find this funny - and nobody wants to upset you in any way - and for those of us who do, it's kind of shutting us up.

No offence meant to anybody... really. :(

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 26/02/2015 22:06

I think you could be right there, Thistledew, it makes perfect sense.

bigbluestars · 26/02/2015 22:08

Just because there isn't blood doesn't mean to say a fall isn't serious.
It's very unkind and ruthless to laugh at other's misfortune.

Salmotrutta · 26/02/2015 22:09

Lying - no offence taken!

I'm a big girl, I can take a disagreement Wink

Jessica - bollocks you say? Well, if you think you are more fun than me then that's fine. Me, I have my doubts.
