To be pissed off at the lack of non-sexy fancy dress costumes available?

I work in a school and it is world book day next week so I need to dress as a book character. I was just browsing for ideas online and realised that almost every costume on sale for women is sexy, short skirts, low cut tops, corsets, stockings etc. I mean FFS, since when was Goldilocks or Red Riding Hood meant to be sexy? They're little girls! AIBU to think there should be at least some non-sexualised versions of these costumes?

Just to clarify, I am talking about fancy dress costumes for women, not children!

YANBU. A facebook acquaintance posted a picture of her 16 year old daughter's planned outfit for wbd (she will be at work experience or something in a school). Anyway. The outfit was a skirt a bit too short for getting down to small child level and a bit low cut for leaning over desks. At least, that was as gently I could put it. Blush

oldcroneat39 · 25/02/2015 21:46

(I hasten to add i wouldn't object to a 16 year old wearing this outfit. But really small children WILL comment if they can see pants or bras in an endearingly blunt 'i like your bra' way)

reni1 · 25/02/2015 22:38

Yanbu, I find it irritating, too. Got some leggings? Buy a cheap oversized green T-Shirt, add a belt, Robin Hood.

Eggybread00 · 25/02/2015 22:52

What about a crayon? The day the crayons quit is a good book!

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 25/02/2015 22:57

You're a woman, the whole point of you is to look sexy. Isn't it?

I went to a fancy dress party a kazillion years ago when I was about 15 as a mechanic ( I wore my brothers overalls). My costume had more fabric in it that all the rest of the girls costumes combined. Sad

oldcroneat39 · 25/02/2015 23:24

You could dress as mary poppins (victorian nanny it's often listed as). Or go as a jacqueline Wilson character from your normal wardrobe.

Froggio · 26/02/2015 00:13

I would put something together yourself. The things you see on these fancy dress sites do seem to be really sexist. It makes me laugh. Don't spend your time being pissed off, spend your time putting together a really innovative outfit.

missingmumxox · 26/02/2015 00:27

Even when I was young and thin, bought costumes where like this.
make your own, I always did, charity shops, ow wardrobe or if you can see, find something to make, I use a method of all three.

Imagination is key.

missingmumxox · 26/02/2015 00:28

Sew not see

QueenBean · 26/02/2015 00:30

Yeah it drives me mad

Want to go as a nurse? Don't you mean, Sexy Nurse?

Want to go as a teacher? Don't you mean, Slutty Teacher?

The costumes are always hideous cheap material too

I bloody hate fancy dress

TendonQueen · 26/02/2015 00:38

Yes, it's awful. Halloween is particularly bad. Sexy Zombie, anyone? Hmm

cogitosum · 26/02/2015 00:42

Yes it's ridiculous. And in the nicest possible way the posts suggesting you sew something are missing the point.

Fedupwithmess · 26/02/2015 00:44

As a woman who's recently achieved her PhD, I found the comments in the reviews for this "sexy PhD costume" especially hilarious.

YANBU in thinking the costumes available always seem to pop up as slutty but on the otherhand using a little more imagination wouldn't be too much to ask, let's face it anything you buy is going to be made of that nasty ass material anyway.

And Fedup, it's a fabulous read it's been doing the rounds for a couple of years now. But most importantly will you not be investing in one, to show off your hard work and achievements? Wink

Fedupwithmess · 26/02/2015 01:13

I think I will be investing in a boak bucket, Strawberry Wink

I prefer to make my own costumes these days, such as "Crazy Cat Lady" in a mangy old purple dressing with beanie baby cats sewn to it, backcombed hair, smeared make-up, pink fluffy cat slippers and fetching QVC pink nylon cat pyjamas and matching cat cameo brooch Wink

Cornettoninja · 26/02/2015 06:23

Those costumes are awful (although I must admit a hint of sadness that I couldn't carry one off anymore even if I wanted to) and it amazes me that the prime time to wear them is Halloween when it's bloody cold!

I concur that the best way is to make your own. Charity shops and eBay are the way to go once you've picked an idea. Or check out the men's costumes on those sites.

Do you know who you want to oh as? You could do miss trunchbull (from Matilda) fairly easily.

WONAR · 26/02/2015 17:59

YANBU, I bought and wore a men's costume for Halloween (a bloody set of scrubs with a surgeon's mask) as the women's equivalent was ridiculously teeny-tiny and revealing. I wanted to go out, have some drinks and a good time without constantly pulling my skirt down!

TattyDevine · 26/02/2015 18:02

Its tricky

I work in a school occasionally and I went as Princess Fiona from Shrek (the ogre version).

It wasn't book day it was a Halloween thing.

Even devil type shite seems to be sexy devil shite. Its an outrage!

muminthecity · 26/02/2015 19:18

I wasn't planning to buy a costume, I was always going to do my own, I was just browsing for inspiration. I was just shocked at the sexism, that's all.
