Steam Irons, the tank ones.

Sorry, should probably have put this somewhere else but hey, ho just flame me. I've had one of these devices with a tank for about two years now. Am I right in thinking the only difference is how long the tank lasts? Should it imitate Puff The Magic Dragon without me pushing the sodding button all the time?

I have one and you have to press something to get it to steam - if that is what you mean.

Mind you , it is the best iron I have every had. (How sad is this thread Grin)

TattyDevine · 25/02/2015 13:39

Yes you have to keep your finger on the steam - its a steam generator but you generate the steam. It should be ergonomically easy to do though.

I would never, never have a "normal" iron again. The way it shoots steam through stuff, it makes a wrinkled as feck linen tablecloth look starched and restauranty with one sweep of steam.

Disclaimer - I don't really iron much, but when I do, I don't want to be faffing around.

Husband powers through 10 business shirts in no time at all too, he loves it for that.

lertgush · 25/02/2015 13:56

Thinking about getting one. Which one is good?

PintofCiderPlease · 25/02/2015 13:59

I have a Morphy Richards Power Steam Elite which I do like. But if were to buy a new one (I'm sorta hoping it doesn't have a forever life span!!!) I would get one that also sprays water. Sometimes overdried clothes still need water spraying on them, all the steam in the world isn't enough for overdried, starched shirts...

MmeMorrible · 25/02/2015 14:00

We have had many steam generates over the years and have think Tefal are the best quality & last the longest (very hard water area).

Agree with pp, I would never go back to s 'normal' iron. I fecking hate ironing as it is.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 25/02/2015 14:00

No - you have to push the button to generate the steam. We've had three of them, haven't met one yet that does it automatically. I imagine that given the volume of steam it would be a bit of a burn risk if it puffed away by itself

toofarfromcivilisation · 25/02/2015 16:21

So it's just a steam iron with a bigger tank at the end of the day? And yes, I know it's a sad thread, ironing is sad.

No its a steam generator which produces much more steam than a conventional steam iron and is therefore much more powerful at removing creases e.g you can iron duvet covers folded over several times and the steam will go through the layers - which should make ironing quicker and easier.

PixieChops · 25/02/2015 20:06

I used to work for Polti. Steam cleaner creators extradinaire. Basically if it's constantly steaming then the valve is stuck open. Have you tried running some lime scale stuff through it? If it's never been done and you live in a hard water area this will more than likely fix your problem. If not then send it back to the manufacturers who should fix it for free depending on warranty.

Janethegirl · 25/02/2015 20:45

Mine's a Philips and you can set the steam setting on the base so you can have it on max steam all the time if that's what you want. It makes ironing shirts really easy Smile. I still hate ironing though!

Salmotrutta · 25/02/2015 20:55

I've heard great things about these.

I loathe ironing with a passion which is why we have a massive pile of it and we do stuff as it is needed but I hate doing shirts etc.

Or anything really...

Would one of these change my life?

Tokelau · 25/02/2015 21:06

Salmotrutta, yes it will change your life. I would say that you could easily cut your ironing time in half.

Salmotrutta · 25/02/2015 21:07

Hmm...

I'm seriously going to look into this.

OctonautsAgain · 25/02/2015 21:11

Not sad at all! I started a thread in good housekeeping earlier asking for recommendations as my 7 year old Morphy Richards has just died and I need a new one.

They're brilliant, create much more steam than a regular iron.

Janethegirl · 25/02/2015 21:50

They do make ironing that much faster but I still hate it.

TheFairyCaravan · 25/02/2015 21:55

You do need to press the button all the time.

I had a Phillips one for about 4 years but it just died. I bought this Tefal one about a month ago. It is brilliant, far better than the Phillips one. It's cut my ironing time almost in half and the water tank is huge so it doesn't need refilling half way through ironing.

dementedpixie · 25/02/2015 21:56

some also put the steam under pressure which also helps iron clothes quicker. It has certainly made it faster to iron dh's shirts. I should have got one with a bigger water tank though (I have a bosch one)

Sister77 · 26/02/2015 08:38

Tefal all the way here! Well designed, easy to use and cut through the ironing!
