To love 'the Romanians are coming' on channel 4

I love their optimism and work ethic. Why must us Brits be such cunts to them on their arrival? Would you uproot, go to a country you don't have any connection to sleep in a cardboard box and still turn up for work every morning? I know I couldn't do it!

Snowglobemouse Roma and Romanian are not the same. I don't know any Roma but I know quite a lot of Romanians and they are nothing like you describe at all.

This thread seems to have been a bit derailed.

The programme isn't exactly a cutting-edge documentary, it's "infotainment" for the masses (I'm one of those masses).

But it does reinforce the fact that for millions of people in the UK, the continuous arrival of economic migrants (Roma, Romanian, E European, whatever) isn't improving their quality of life. Which is why UKIP will do rather well in May.

tiggie so I should feel differently about these people in belfast because they're not Roma travellers even though my reasons for disliking them are much the same as you disliking irish travellers? a 'trail of filth' matches my experience. Yet...it's ok for you to judge irish travellers but not ok for me to judge Romanians who might be travellers?

I watched it and felt a lot if sympathy for the people on it. But they kept mentioning negative stereotypes of the Brits like we don't care about our elderly parents so it works both ways.
As for the men with families in ronznua and many health problems.. I suspect it don't be long before the whole family is over here needing free treatment and social housing.. And bring the most needy will go to the front of the queue.

why is everyone bothered that I dislike this group of Romanians but semi understanding when they think I might be mistaking Roma travellers for Romanians? why is it ok for me to judge and make assumptions about roma travellers but not general Romanian citizens? serious question. I've had a few 'but you can't judge Romanians by the standards of Roma traveller' comments. Why is it ok for everyone to make assumptions about one group? devil's advocate
