Sitting here thinking about mine when I should be working and thought I would throw it out to the MN masses. Grin

After much deliberation, it is a tie for me between:

'Jonnys in the Basement mixing up the medicine, I'm on the pavement thinking 'bout the government' - Dylan

And

'Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty'

Anything that pulls you up? Makes you laugh? Breaks your heart? Has great memories?

That Nirvana song is not Breed...it is Drain You Blush

theworkofsatan · 25/02/2015 12:07

Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt

YouBetterWerk · 25/02/2015 12:24

I'm not scared of dying, I just don't want to
If I stop lying, I'll just disappoint you

  • Robbie Williams, Come Undone.

I think as a lyricist he's actually pretty underrated.

Another fan of 'tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty' here.

And Elbow. From Flyboy Blues:

'My oldest friends are a serious habit'

'mother, forgive me,
I still want a bottle of good Irish whisky and a bundle of smokes on my grave'.

the whole of Open Arms and Starlings.

I second the Tunng Bullets lyric above. a couple more

'And though you love me, I'm not Jenny in the night'

'And I miss having coffee,
in bed watching TV, the ghost of an image,
it's just leeting glimpses'

If You Got the Money, Jamie T

'You keep stopping
You should tell your girl more often
that loving
is all about doors unlocking'.

I love lyrics threads.

Sickoffrozen · 25/02/2015 13:47

Heifer wines could be human cries
Closer, comes the screaming knife
This beautiful creature must die
This beautiful creature must die
A death for no reason
And death for no reason is Murder

It's not natural, normal or kind
The flesh you so fancifully fry
The meat in your mouth
As you savour the flavour
OF MURDER.

(Another cheery Smiths one! Meat is Murder)

SoftDay · 25/02/2015 14:14

Ah, some wonderful stuff here.

My favourite lyricist is Kris Kristofferson and my favourite love song is his "Loving Her was Easier":

I have seen the mornin' burnin' golden on the mountain in the skies
Achin' with the feelin' of the freedom of an eagle when she flies
Turnin' on the world the way she smiled upon my soul as I lay dyin'
Healin' as the colors in the sunshine and the shadows of her eyes

Wakin' in the mornin' to the feelin' of her fingers on my skin
Wipin' out the traces of the people and the places that I've been
Teachin' me that yesterday was somethin' that I'd never thought of trying'
Talkin' of tomorrow and the money love and time we had to spend
Lovin' her was easier than anything I'll ever do again

Comin' close together with a feelin' that I've never known before in my time
She ain't ashamed to be a woman or afraid to be a friend
I don't know the answer to the easy way she opened every door in my mind
But dreamin' was as easy as believin' it was never gonna end
And lovin' her was easier than anything I'll ever do again

vladthedisorganised · 25/02/2015 14:16

So many!

Elbow - "Grow a fucking heart, love - I've got your number, you've got mine"

Public Enemy - "Black woman in Hollywood's got one profession - A lawyer? The President? Out of the question!"

Pavement - "Out on my skateboard, the night is just humming and the gum smacks are the pulse I'll follow if my Walkman fades" (describes my 18 year old self to a T)

Beastie Boys - "And now I'll say something that's long overdue
The disrespect of women has got to be through
To the mothers and the sisters and our wives and friends
I'm sending my love and respect to the end"

Nocturne123 · 25/02/2015 14:18

Yes to kris kristofferson soft! Loved him live too Smile

SoftDay · 25/02/2015 14:32

Oh, he's wonderful, Nocturne!!

Another beautiful song is "Scorn Not His Simplicity" by Phil Coulter, especially Luke Kelly's version:

See the child
With the golden hair
Yet eyes that show the emptiness inside
Do we know
Can we understand just how he feels
Or have we really tried

See him now
As he stands alone
And watches children play at children's games
Simple child
He looks almost like the others
Yet they know he's not the same

Scorn not his simplicity
But rather try to love him all the more
Scorn not his simplicity
Oh no
Oh no

See him stare
Not recognizing that kind face
That only yesterday he loved
The loving face
Of a mother who can't understand what she's been guilty of

How she cried tears of happiness
The day the doctor told her it's a boy
Now she cries tears of helplessness
And thinks of all the things he can't enjoy

Scorn not his simplicity
But rather try to love him all the more
Scorn not his simplicity
Oh no
Oh no

Only he knows how to face the future hopefully
Surrounded by despair
He won't ask for your pity or your sympathy
But surely you should care

Scorn not his simplicity
But rather try to love him all the more
Scorn not his simplicity
Oh no
Oh no
Oh no

DrankSangriaInThePark · 25/02/2015 15:31

This thread just makes me want to read all my old diaries, love letters and drink gin out of mugs. Grin

"Stay for just a while
Stay and let me look at you
It's been so long, I hardly knew you
Standing in the door

Stay with me a while
I only wanna talk to you
We've traveled halfway 'round the world
To find ourselves again"

From Mr Cool as Fuck Diamond. (September Morn) "we danced until the night became a brand new day" (I never danced, but there can be nothing better than seeing the new day from the back end of the old one...)

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 25/02/2015 16:59

I have loved reading all your lyrics.
All of Ignoreland by REM but this snippet particularly...

I know that this is vitriol. No solution, spleen-venting,
But I feel better having screamed. Don't you?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/02/2015 17:16

And when you ran to me. Your cheeks flushed with the night. We walked on frosted fields of juniper and lamplight

For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her - Simon & Garfunkel

tinks4 · 25/02/2015 18:23

It seems like yesterday
But it was long ago
Janey was lovely, she was the queen of my nights
There in the darkness with the radio playlng low
And the secrets that we shared
The mountains that we moved
Caught like a wildfire out of control
Till there was nothing left to burn and nothing left to prove

And I remember what she said to me
How she swore that it never would end
I remember how she held me oh so tight
Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then

Against The Wind - Bob Seger, beautiful song.

GothyGeisha · 25/02/2015 19:49

All that I am
All that I ever was
Is here in your perfect eyes
They're all I can see
Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol

There's a hole in my soul - you can see it in my face - its a real big place
Feel - Robbie Williams

Ujjayi · 25/02/2015 20:03

She's A Star by James: I tried to narrow it down to a few lines but to be honest it isn't possible!

Whenever she's feeling empty
Whenever she's feeling insecure
Whenever her face is frozen
Unable to fake it anymore
Her shadow is always with her
Her shadow could always keep her small
So frightened that he won’t love her
She builds up a wall

Oh no, she knows where to hide in the dark
Oh no, she's nowhere to hide in the dark
She's a star
She's a star

She's been in disguise forever
She's tried to disguise her stellar views
Much brighter than all this static
Now she's coming through

Oh no, she knows where to hide in the dark
Oh no, she's nowhere to hide in the dark
She's a star
She's a star

Don't tell her to turn down
Put on your shades if you can't see
Don't tell her to turn down
Turn up the flame
She's a star
She's a star

It's a long road
It's a good call
It's a long road
It's a good call

You got it
You got it
She's a Star

AgentCooper · 25/02/2015 20:16

When the rain hit the roof
Like the sound of a finished kiss
Like a lip lifted from a lip

The Go-Betweens, 'The Wrong Road'

fairgame · 25/02/2015 20:28

Maybe by Kelly Clarkson. All of the lyrics really mean a lot to me.

I'm strong
But I break
I'm stubborn
And I make plenty of mistakes
Yeah I'm hard
And life with me is never easy
To figure out, to love
I'm jaded but oh so lovely
All you have to do is hold me
And you'll know and you'll see just how sweet it can be
If you'll trust me, love me, let me
Maybe, maybe

Someday
When we're at the same place
When we're on the same road
When it's OK to hold my hand
Without feeling lost
Without all the excuses
When it's just because you love me, you let me, you need me
Then maybe, maybe
All you have to do is hold me
And you'll know and you'll see just how sweet it can be
If you'll trust me, love me, let me
Maybe, maybe

I'm confusing as hell
I'm north and south
And I'll probably never have it all figured out
But what I know is I wasn't meant to walk this world without you
And I promise I'll try
Yeah I'm gonna try to give you every little part of me
Every single detail you missed with your eyes
Then maybe
Maybe, yeah maybe

One day
We'll meet again and you'll need me, you'll see me completely
Every little bit
Oh yeah maybe you'll love me, you'll love me then

I don't want to be tough
And I don't want to be proud
I don't need to be fixed and I certainly don't need to be found
I'm not lost
I need to be loved
I just need to be loved
I just want to be loved by you and I won't stop 'cause I believe
That maybe, yeah maybe
Maybe, yeah maybe

I should know better than to touch the fire twice
But I'm thinking maybe, yeah maybe you're mine

Maybe

Mama1980 · 25/02/2015 20:39

When you feel all alone
Like the world has turned it back on you
And you're caught in a one way street
With the monsters in your head,
When darkness is upon your door
And you feel like you can't take anymore
Let me be the one you call
If you jump I won't let you fall...
(Savage garden crash and burn)
It sums up the relationship I have with my closest friend, I call in the middle of the night and she's there and vice a versa. We refer to each other as our safety net, I don't know what I'd do without her.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 25/02/2015 20:46

I like the one from Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars:

"Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end"

TooManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 25/02/2015 20:56

"If a double-decker bus crashes into us / To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die / And if a 10-ton truck kills the both of us / To die by your side, the pleasure, the privilege is mine."

There is a light that never goes out- The Smiths

(I could have picked hundreds of lyrics written by Morrissey, he is a genius)

foreverton · 25/02/2015 20:57

"What's love? Just a second hand emotion" Tina Turner.

Or very different one...

"My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the empire state" Fun.

And nobody sees, how shaky my knees"

Poor Boy by Nick Drake

Pilgit · 25/02/2015 21:05

"I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now" Dylan

"Summertime, and the living is easy" and the rest of the lovely lullaby by Gerschwin

You can't see with the sun in your eyes
Your innocent
You think everything is possible
Nothing's gonna get you baby
Everything is possible
Nothing's gonna beat you in this life
You're alright
