Sitting here thinking about mine when I should be working and thought I would throw it out to the MN masses. Grin

After much deliberation, it is a tie for me between:

'Jonnys in the Basement mixing up the medicine, I'm on the pavement thinking 'bout the government' - Dylan

And

'Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty'

Anything that pulls you up? Makes you laugh? Breaks your heart? Has great memories?

Oh my god, 'Slipping through my fingers'... floods of tears, every time. Which is surprising cos Abba weren't renowned for their meaningful, moving lyrics :D

Also "Teach your children" by Cat Stevens/ Crosby, Stills and Nash. Same effect...

First line of Oceanographer's Choice by the Mountain Goats;

"Guy in a skeleton costume comes up to the guy in the superman suit, runs through him with a broadsword."

What a way to start a song Grin

The passing of time
And all of its crimes
Is making me sad again
The passing of time
And all of its sickening crimes
Is making me sad again
But don't forget the songs
That made you cry
And the songs that saved your life
Yes, you're older now
And you're a clever swine
But they were the only ones who ever stood by you

The passing of time leaves empty lives
Waiting to be filled
I'm here with the cause
I'm holding the torch
In the corner of your room
Can you hear me?
And when you're dancing and laughing
And finally living
Hear my voice in your head
And think of me kindly

"Our homeward step was just as light as the tap-dancing feet of Astaire" makes me smile every time. It's such a lovely thing to picture.

MoreCrackThanHarlem · 25/02/2015 00:10

sure

That's magic in a cheetah print coat
Just a slip underneath it I hope
Asking if I can have one of those
Organic cigarettes that she smokes
Wraps her lips round the Mexican coke
Makes you wish that you were the bottle
Takes a sip of your soul and it sounds like…

Something 'bout the way the hair falls in your face
I love the shape you take when crawling towards the pillowcase
You tell me where to go and though I might leave to find it
I'll never let your head hit the bed without my hand behind it

Now that she's older
As the embers of romance
Fade to morgages and 'lecky bills
Being comfortable and that
Nobody told her
That she'd ever reach the stage
Where her husband bored her
Or she lied about her age

Yes Dr our dd3 nearly did slip through our fingers at 12. Never will get over that and this was playing on the radio when we heard she was alive but in a bad way.

On a lighter note love 'Hard times and dont you want me as it's my own teen era. Grin oh and i love you yes I do cos I know that you love me too* bad manners.

Also i never thought I'd feel this way quite as much as I do it must be love and too much too young as we had ds young.

Great great thread op.

Your hair hangs in golden steps
You're a bonafide in every respect
You are walking through streets that mean nothing to you
You believe you're above it and I don't really blame you
Maybe that's why you speak like a child;
The things you're saying like I'm so free and so wild
And I believe it when you look in my eyes;
You offer me a life, and never lies
Least only the kind to make me smile

Your clothes are clean and your mind is productive
It shops in store where only the best buy
You're cool and hard, and if I sound like a lecher
It's probably true,
But at least there's no lecture

I really like it when you speak like a child
The crazy sayings like I'm so free and so wild
You have to make a bargain with me now
A promise that you won't change somehow
No way, now how

Spent all day thinking about you
Spent all night coming to terms with it
Time and conditions are built to tame
Nothing lasts with age, so people say
But I will always try to feel the same

I really like it when you speak like a child
The way you hate the homely rank and the file
The way you're so proud to be oh, so free and so wild

I'm wishing you the best. Pray that you are blessed. Bring much success no stress and lots of happiness
. I'm not gonna blast you on the radio. I'm better than that
. I' m not gonna lie on you or family. I'm better than that
.I'm not gonna hate you in the magazine. I' m better than that.
I' m not gonna compromise my Christianity. I'm better than that.
You know I'm not gonna diss you on the internet, because my mama taught me better than that.

'Gonna write a classic, gonna write it in an attic' Grin

Joking of course.

salsmum · 25/02/2015 02:28

So how can you tell me you're lonely
and say for you that the sun don't shine?
let me take you by the hand and lead you through the 'Streets of London'
I'll show you something
that'll make you change your mind.
...and

Also

At the age of thirty - seven
She realised she would never ride
Through Paris in a sports car with the warm wind in her hair (Marianne Faithfull, The Ballad of Lucy Jordan )

Flambola · 25/02/2015 03:35

7am, the garbage truck beeps as it backs up
And I start my day thinking about what I've thrown away
Could I push rewind?
The credits traverse signifying the end
But I missed the best part
Could we please go back to start?
Forgive my indecision.

"Speak Softly Love"

Speak softly, love
And hold me warm against your heart
I feel your words
The tender trembling moments start
We're in a world, our very own
Sharing a love that only few have ever known

Wine-colored days warmed by the sun
Deep velvet nights when we are one

Speak softly, love
So no one hears us but the sky
The vows of love
We make will live until we die
My life is yours and all because
You came into my world with love so softly love

Wine-colored days warmed by the sun
Deep velvet nights when we are one

Speak softly, love
So no one hears us but the sky
The vows of love we make will live until we die
My life is yours and all because

"Losing My Religion"

Oh life, it's bigger
It's bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no, I've said too much
I've said enough

That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no, I've said too much
I haven't said enough

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

Every whisper
Of every waking hour
I'm choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool, fool
Oh no, I've said too much
I've said enough

Consider this
Consider this, the hint of the century
Consider this, the slip
That brought me to my knees, failed
What if all these fantasies come
Flailing around
Now I've said too much

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
That was just a dream

That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no, I've said too much
I haven't said enough

I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try

But that was just a dream
Try, cry, why try
That was just a dream
Just a dream

From Dido's White Flag - a song that inspired me to survive when going through a difficult work situation

And when we meet
Which I'm sure we will
All that was there
Will be there still
I'll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I've moved on....

"Brothers In Arms"

These mist-covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battle raged high
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line in your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

Dolcelatte · 25/02/2015 05:50

The Partisan
When they poured across the border
I was cautioned to surrender,
This I could not do;
I took my gun and vanished.

I have changed my name so often,
I've lost my wife and children
But I have many friends,
And some of them are with me.

An old woman gave us shelter,
Kept us hidden in the garret,
Then the soldiers came;
She died without a whisper.

There were three of us this morning
I'm the only one this evening
But I must go on;
The frontiers are my prison.

Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing,
Through the graves the wind is blowing,
Freedom soon will come;
Then we'll come from the shadows.

Les allemands e'taient chez moi,
Ils me dirent, "r©signe toi,"
Mais je n'ai pas peur;
J'ai repris mon ¢me.

The germans were at my home
They said, "sign yourself,"
But I am not afraid
I have retaken my soul.

J'ai change' cent fois de nom,
J'ai perdu femme et enfants
Mais j'ai tant d'amis;
J'ai la france entie're.

I've changed names a hundred times
I have lost wife and children
But I have so many friends
I have all of france

Un vieil homme dans un grenier
Pour la nuit nous a cache',
Les allemands l'ont pris;
Il est mort sans surprise.

An old man, in an attic
Hid us for the night
The Germans captured him
He died without surprise.

Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing,
Through the graves the wind is blowing,
Freedom soon will come;
Then we'll come from the shadows.
