To be shaken up?

I've just taken my yorkshire terrier for a walk. On the way back, literally round the corner from my house, a green car pulled up next to me (there's a grass verge that runs alongside the pavement so he wasn't directly next to me but close) with a man driving and a woman in the passenger seat, and they were staring at my dog. They then wound the window down and the woman started making like a tut to the dog asif to call her over. the man started asking about the dog. Or 'the pup' as he called it. How old is it, where did I get it from, have I got the papers, etc. I said yes, and started walking away. They then reversed the car in the direction I was walking. I picked up the dog and legged it home. The car wasn't following or i'd have gone into the corner shop and waited till they called the police. I was terrified they'd get out and grab her. I've got home and burst into tears but bf thinks i'm being silly and have just scared myself reading about all the dogknappings going on round here. Bf thinks they've probably just lost their dog and are driving around looking for it. I feel like I daren't take her out again and will have to watch her in the garden more now. Being a yorkie, she often tries to escape, and sometimes manages it seen as the landlord won't fix the bloody fence grr. Anyway, AIBU to not just forget about this? I want to write it all over fb and report it to the police but maybe they genuinely were just looking for their dog? I'm still shaking though and the dog is curled up on my knee, she knows something's wrong!

hodgepodge, we are in Leeds, actually closer to Bradford than Leeds. Looking back i'm starting to think less and less that they were just looking for their dog. I've read all these comments to bf and he says I was probably right to report it then. Phew.

That doesn't sound to me like someone who has lost a dog, or they would have said - regardless of the dogs age, that to me sounds like someone being intimidating and demanding info that is non of there business, which would make me think dog baiter.
Believe it or not, some idiots are that blatant and if anyone were to do it to me, i'd take the reg number and call the police.
I get lots of people enquiring about PIL's boxer bitch, and occasionally the odd person who will shout out and not take the hint to go away and follow me, luckily she's a cracking guard dog and they move on.

ahbollocks · 23/02/2015 17:12

Poor you :( it does sound suspicious. Next time you take her out keep your phone in your hand. If anyonr tries it again hold your phone at them as if you are taking a picture or just immediately dial and keep staring at them. Will un nerve the little fuckers. Someone recently tried to sell mu dad a stolen lab- my dad took it to the vets and it had a serious medical condition that had obviously been gone untreated. Lab got returned safely thank god

chlo95 · 23/02/2015 17:39

luckily we have a big garden so I will just supervise her in the garden, she is old and small so really doesn't need regular walks she just likes to get out every so often, which we will but with my boyfriend there and probably drive out somewhere nice and walk around there :)

I've had a few dodgy people stop me over the years -have a big lurcher and a saluki (hare coursing favourites -not for me though!). It's not unusual for dogs to be snatched unfortunately. I always just say they are not friendly at all (they are) and that they are spayed and chipped (true). Seems to put people off.

MojaveWanderer123 · 23/02/2015 18:59

Don't wait for your LL to fix the gate because if your dog gets out and is caught by the dog warden you'll have fees to pay so it's cheaper to fix the gate. Plus your dog could be run over, taken in by someone who goes on to keep him or dog-knapped.

mumteedum · 23/02/2015 19:09

You've done the right thing reporting. I had similar fewest years ago. Bit of a rough bloke asking questions and checking my dog out having pulled up in a car. I think he was after dodgy breeding maybe so I laid it on thick he was castrated.

Listen to instinct I'd say.

HayDayRookie · 23/02/2015 19:25

wit I bet your two are gorgeous! Do watch out though, your two are very much sought after within the travelling community.

pudcat · 23/02/2015 19:51

We have had a lot of dogs taken from gardens round here. It is so worrying.

tomandizzymum · 23/02/2015 19:58

Poor you, sounds like you did the right thing with 101.

chlo95 · 23/02/2015 20:36

Landlord is coming tomorrow, the fence is unfixable from the strong winds and needs replacing, and i'll be damned if i'm paying for that as well as all the other repairs we've paid for when he doesn't pull his finger out. But the fence is the back garden fence onto the next door neighbours garden who we are friendly with so not the end of the world if she gets next door. I'll start taking her in the garden on her lead if needs be. Noone else is getting their hands on my doggy! thanks guys x

If you are looking for your lost dog you don't ask about someone else's! Definitely suspicious. Keep a good watch over your dog and tell your friends and neighbours too.

chlo95 · 15/08/2015 20:54

Sorry for bumping the zombie thread but this has just happened again, same people, absolutely terrified. On hold to 101 now and we got their reg this time but my god I'm shaken up even more this time

OP posts:
redfairy · 15/08/2015 21:09

How scary! Did you manage to get their vehicle reg or were you too shaken up?
My mini dach generates a lot of interest from members of the public and I am completely aware of how easy she would be to just lift. I would plaster this all over FB to let people be alert to any approaches by these people.

comedycentral · 15/08/2015 21:16

Omg what did they say this time? x

ItsAll · 15/08/2015 21:16

Bloody hell chlo, well done for getting the car registration.

chlo95 · 15/08/2015 21:18

Yep got the reg, have reported to 101. Don't really know why I posted on here just to vent really ???? I got my phone out to take a photo and told them I was calling the police and they drove off.. If you were legitimately looking for your lost dog you wouldn't do that would you.. I'm a bit scared of putting anything on fb incase they find out where I live, I'm on some of the for sale sites and they could easily pretend they were interested and ask for my address.. Since the last time she's never out in the garden alone anyway but I hate the thought of them knowing where I live!

OP posts:
comedycentral · 15/08/2015 21:20

Well done to you for getting their details. They are clearly a pair of complete wankers that don't have good intentions for dogs. Good luck with the police

TheCarrotDiet · 15/08/2015 21:22

Well done, must have been awful.

chlo95 · 15/08/2015 21:31

They are sending someone out to take a statement, I'm suprised I didn't think they'd take it so seriously. Can't help but wonder would they do it normally, or if they've had other reports of the same reg so they're taking a statement to prosecute.. Hopefully the latter or maybe that's just wishful thinking! I've always thought that it was a bit of an urban myth the extent to which dog snatching happens but I'm really shaken up by it.

OP posts:
SilverHawk · 15/08/2015 21:40

Well done Chlo Flowers for keeping your head and acting smart.
Did you get a good look at the occupants of the car? was it the same green car? Man and woman.... could they have been trying to intimidate you? Nothing to do with the dog.
Stay safe.

pieceofpurplesky · 15/08/2015 21:40

Don't know where you are but we had messages from the local vets in Cheshire warning us of several instances of dogs being grabbed this way.

chlo95 · 15/08/2015 22:09

Same green car and same people in it, no it was definitely the dog, it was exactly same as last time, asking if he had his papers, saying they had his papers at home, only thing different was them saying 'benji'.. She didn't react and she's a girl not a boy! Luckily was also walking my MIL's springer spaniel (who's soft as shit) but we hid behind him anyway! We're in leeds piece but seems widespread now :(

OP posts:
comedycentral · 16/08/2015 22:02

How did it go with the police?

MidniteScribbler · 17/08/2015 00:05

It's happening a lot over here in Australia as well. The latest is they are going to the door with a collar and lead and saying they are from the council and have been instructed to seize the dog. Mine are never even outside in the yard without me now, and I have webcams all over the place (I have six pedigree show dogs who aren't desexed, so a prime target). I don't even take them for a walk now, I put them in the car in the garage and go for a drive down to the canine showgrounds that I have access to as a member.

Keep your girl safe OP, and keep your phone in your hand when you go for a walk. A photo of these arseholes would go a long way to helping the police.
