To think the jeans should have been returned washed or at least sooner?

You're probably all going to tell me I'm being entitled but this is irritating me so thought I'd put it your judgement.

DS is potty training at the moment. Last Friday he had an accident (wee not poo) at nursery. When accidents happen nursery staff bag the clothes and return them for washing which is fine. However they accidentally put DS's jeans in the bag of another boy. I noticed they were missing and asked nursery if they knew what had happened to them but they couldn't find them.

They were finally returned by the other boys mum on Friday this week in a different nappy bag (nursery always use orange ones this was white) but still unwashed. They STUNK - honestly I felt sick when I opened the bag. I had to rinse them for about 10 minutes before the stink of ammonia faded.

AIBU to think that the receiving parents should have washed them before returning them especially after hanging onto them for a week, clearly having opened the bag and then rebagged them? Or should I jsut be grateful they returned them at all?

I'd have washed them if I'd seen them, but I usually only open DS's bag if he's wearing different clothes so I know there's something in there to wash. So I probably wouldn't have noticed they were there for a while.

I'd wash to make them more pleasant.

I might not have noticed as I only take the DCs bags when they need editing or at the end of our PT week. Herding two pre-schoolers, plus the older one's show and tell bag, and any additional paperwork, I avoid carrying anything non essential.

I agree with pp who said unless their dc is in different clothes I wouldn't think to check their bag. Equally, I don't always check they have everything in their bag until the morning before they're back so in that instance I'd rebag and return on the day (and apologise).

Washing would be nice if the person knew they were there. But that's a big assumption really.
