to challenge the schools nuts ban

The school has a strict no nuts policy. Apparently this is because someone in a higher year has a peanut allergy. I can understand banning peanuts if the allergy is severe but peanuts are very different to normal proper nuts and reactions to these are not to my knowledge anywhere near as bad as peanuts. It just makes lunch quite difficult as we are vegan and would love to pop something like a nakd bar in lunchboxes.

Aibu to go to the school and at least establish if a total ban on nuts is needed / necessary?

Well you are about to have a busy morning on mumsnet...

HellBoundNothingFound · 22/02/2015 10:28

I'd like to ban Vegans...it's a lifestyle choice not a medical one

magimedi · 22/02/2015 10:28

As my DC are adult, I am long done with education, but I truly thought that nuts were banned in all schools, given the prevalence of nut allergies.

PossumPoo · 22/02/2015 10:28

Maybe let your dc take a ham or egg sambo instead of nuts?? Hmm

fuctifino · 22/02/2015 10:29

If your child wants nuts so badly, can they not have them for breakfast and tea Confused?

Hoppinggreen · 22/02/2015 10:29

Will your child die if they don't eat nuts at school?
Well an allergic child could if your child does take nuts to school so yes you are being VERY unreasonable.

feebeecat · 22/02/2015 10:29

Wow, yes good luck OP.

Daisy17 · 22/02/2015 10:30

Yes, allergies to other nuts can be just as bad, to answer your question. I can see it's annoying, but I would do some research about it before going into school so you are talking from a (much) more informed standpoint.

Seekingtheanswers · 22/02/2015 10:30

It's a pain for us too, because we are vegetarian. But that's a choice we make - allergy sufferers don't have the same choice.

My nephew is allergic to hazelnuts. A reaction could kill him.

I'd rather put up with the minor inconvenience of having to think of something else to put in the lunchbox tbh.

Lol!

Salmotrutta · 22/02/2015 10:33

Oh my.

This will be good.

avocadotoast · 22/02/2015 10:33

Nooope. I worked with someone with a peanut allergy and that extended to other nuts. If she ate one, she could die.

I used to be vegan so I understand it can be difficult to get snacks together that are nutritious and don't involve nuts, but there will be other options.

YABVU. Why is your child's right to eat nuts more important than another child's right to attend school without fear of a severe allergic reaction?

pigglewiggle · 22/02/2015 10:33

OK sorry didn't realise other nuts can be just as dangerous. My op was just about talking to the school to see if the total ban is needed or if there are certain nuts that no one is alergic to.

That is all Hmm

SuburbanRhonda · 22/02/2015 10:34

You would love to pop something like a nakd bar in lunchboxes, would you, OP?

And this trumps another child's need not to have an anaphylactic reaction, does it?

Hmm
Arsenic · 22/02/2015 10:35

FGS get the thread pulled, before you get dismembered.

Salmotrutta · 22/02/2015 10:36

Don't sugar coat it kissmyheathenass (love your name) Grin

ShellyF · 22/02/2015 10:36

I am a Headteacher and would not compromise on this issue. A nut allergy can be life threatening!

You obviously haven't carried out your research before writing such a selfish post.

You are lucky, you are vegan by choice.

My son has a severe allergy to Brazil nuts and cashew nuts. Even if there are broken empty Brazil nut shells in the same room, it is enough to start him sneezing, streaming and wheezing when he breathes.

As another poster pointed out, why not give them nuts at breakfast or dinner? Again, you're lucky you have the choice.

stargirl1701 · 22/02/2015 10:39

The local authority in which I work as a teacher no longer supports nut bans in school.

ilovesooty · 22/02/2015 10:39

I think you should report this thread and get it pulled.

I can't imagine why you didn't at least do some rudimentary googling before you posted it.

JudgeRinderSays · 22/02/2015 10:39

YANBU Even the Anaphylactic Society do not recommend schools going nutfree. It is a s usual schools not wanting to take an ounce of responsibility for anything.
So what, if like my DN, a child is severely allergic to a whol;e range of things. Is teh school to ban each and every allergy?
The sufferers need to learn that the world is NOT nutfree and learn how to protect themselves.
Not sharing food and good hygiene should be enough to prevent contamination and the kids do have epipens with them if teh worst comes to the worstg

If your child wants nuts so badly, can they not have them for breakfast and tea confused

And if the child has nuts for breakfast is that not a source of contamination?
