Russia have always had the potential to go a bit haywire. I wouldn't be any more worried than you would be usually i.e keep one eye on any news.

mrsfuzzy · 20/02/2015 23:11

i was growing up during the 'cold war ' era now that was a really worrying time, talk of nuclear war as well as the I.R.A bombings and the like, as corn said, there have always being problems in the world, not dodgy countries, just some dodgy people living in them. try to put your thoughts to one side, easier said than done i know, but these things invariably pass us by which we can be thankful for.

MilfordCubicle · 20/02/2015 23:13

Russia have been flexing their muscles since the 1950s and we're all still here Smile

HoneyIsBeePoo · 20/02/2015 23:15

I dunno, who has the time, really? There's nothing any of us can do about any of it anyway

Gruntfuttock · 20/02/2015 23:16

Now, I'm scared about Russia, but I'm also scared about North Korea, so, which is the biggest threat?

I fear that there's only one way to find out.

championnibbler · 20/02/2015 23:17

No, don't worry.
It's just a bit of sabre rattling.
Putin is a nob, but he's not stupid.

Its ISIS you want to be worrying about....

North Korea aren't a threat and Russia are somewhat misunderstood.

We only know what the media are telling us.

Putin is measuring up to be a proper old style tyrant. He is not interested in democracy. He doesn't like being challenged. A stable, united Europe challenges him and he hates it. This latest crisis in Ukraine kicked off because the elected government in Ukraine started to lean towards democracy and the EU. So he invaded. This makes me even more keen on a strong EU because Putin doesn't like it. All his Christmases would come at once if the EU project started to fall over. He must love Nigel Farage and all the continental far right parties doing his work for him.

I think he is a truly scary figure - a tyrant with a massive chip on his shoulder and a fast-failing economy looking to make his country great again, with nationalism as his banner. Where have we seen this before? Glasnost is a distant memory.

Stratter5 · 20/02/2015 23:47

He scares me, I know I scare easily, but he does scare me.

Doingakatereddy · 20/02/2015 23:59

I'd be a lot more scared of Angela Merkel, Christine Legard, Jose Barroso and Herman Van Rompey if I were you. The Euro without political and financial integration will never work. If they do achieve integration, It will be the 'end of nations' & that will lead ultimately to WW3.

But Russia, they are cleverer, bolder and more patient than any EU faction. They'll let us tear ourselves apart & occasionally antognise us to the point of fear so we don't forget them.

PoppyField · 21/02/2015 21:01

Er... how exactly did you get to WW3 Doingakate? I think I must have missed a couple of steps.

'End of nations' - is that in Nostradamus?

emilywrites · 21/02/2015 21:37

I'm worried about Russia. I'm in Kiev most of the year for my job, and the way that Western media ignored or misrepresented (misunderstood?) events here over the past two years scares me: I can't figure out the reason for media ineptitude, and can't help but worry that it can't have been prompted by anything good...

It worries me that we (the West) let Ukraine down so badly: we promised to guarantee Ukraine's security in the Budapest Memorandum, and then we stood by, wringing hands and muttering about "sanctions" (which we KNOW won't faze Putin at all) while Ukraine was invaded and ravished. What do our politicians know about Russia that dissuaded them from keeping the promise of the Budapest Memorandum? That worries me. It worries me quite a bit.

MrsGoslingWannabe · 21/02/2015 22:02

Yeah the EU especially the UK has been pretty fucking useless during the whole thing. I feel so sorry for those affected in Ukraine. Putin is a bully who likes to throw his weight around but I can see why he doesn't like Europe cos I don't!

Merinda · 03/03/2015 21:35

Unless you live in Ukraine right now, you should not worry more than you ever have.
My relatives and friends in Ukraine, on the other hand, who had hopes for a better future, have had those hopes dashed. The country is at war, and many are dying, getting wounded, captured and tortured.
The so-called guarantors of the Budapest memorandum have done fuck-all apart from expressing "grave concern".
It will take a couple million of Ukrainian lives before you should start getting worried here

BeachyKeen · 04/03/2015 05:35

I worry more about ISIS. Those fuckers spread like mold in an damp house. They are recruiting people from all over, with the idea of sending them home like some kind of a ticking time bomb.

Scholes34 · 04/03/2015 09:25

American it itching to get fully involved, but they're a lot further away from Russia and the Ukraine than we are in Europe. I've now got XTC's Generals and Majors running through my head.
