To ask for suggestions for a great pub or cosy restaraunt in Cambridge

DH and I are coming to terms with some bad news, health wise, and need a good day out before some tests next week. I am looking for a cheerful pub with open fires and a great lunch menu, or a cosy restaurant with similar ambience. Can anyone help?

The mitre or fort st George or castle inn on castle st and nearby cocum Indian restaurant. All lovely homely and good food

City Centre with open fire: The Eagle - has lots of little rooms and corners. Does food, though I haven't eaten there in a while. Loads of ambience. Also The Fort St George on Midsummer Common. The Four Horseshoes on Madingley Road is very posh and lovely if money is no object. The Cambridge Blue on Gwydir St and Kingston Arm on Kingston St - both off Mill Road very local and nice. On the other side of town the Mill on the newnham side of the river has lovely views.

D'Arrys on King Street. Fantastic food and pubby kind of setting as it used to be a pub. Highly recommend.

Fort St George near the common, absolutely, I love it there.

There are some great cosy restaurants off the market square at the back of the Lion Yard as well.

There's a very nice pup in the same village where Jeffrey Archer lives - but for the life of me, I can't remember its name.

Sorry to hear about the bad news. Please order a bottle of champagne. It's a great pick-me-up - I'd rather drink it when I have bad news, rather than to celebrate good news as, bizarrely, I tend to feel better afterwards (well, for a little bit, anyway). xx

dougie, you are thinking of the Rupert Brooke, a lovely pub that does good food. If you do go to Grantchester at the moment, you'll need to go via the M11 or Newnham as the bridge is closed.

For a good pub with fires, I'd second (third?) the Fort St George.

St. John's chop house, behind St. John's college. Absolutely amazing food and very friendly staff. Or the pub at Madingley which if memory serves is called the Three Horseshoes is also fab and slightly off the beaten track. Hope your news isn't as bad as it's looking Flowers.

I second The Fort St. George, D'Arrys is nice, but not 'cosy' more buzzy imo.

I like The Pint Shop just off the market sq or Cambridge Brew House in King St, you can find cosy tables and good food in both

Stormingateacup · 20/02/2015 22:09

The Backstreet Bistro.

Candles, wine bottles, dark wood, fabulous food

BestZebbie · 20/02/2015 22:16

Also if you are up for a short walk/very short drive the Plough at Coton has open fires and is a good restaurant.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 21/02/2015 05:23

I like The Castle but don't think it fits what you're looking for.

I'd also suggest the Fort St George or The Eagle if you want City itself. There are loads of fab pubs in villages just outside Cambridge. My favourites are The Plough in Coton and The Willow Tree in Bourn.

Hooe you find somewhere and that your dh is ok.
