SOUTH OF MANCHESTER

Postchildrenpregranny · 19/02/2015 17:07

Thinking of down sizing and moving North -partly to realise some capital (DD2 lives in Manchester, DD1 in London, which we cannot afford. We aren't moving just to 'be near' as no guarantee she'll stay)
Does anyone know anything about Whaley Bridge? Marple Bridge? Macclesfield ? Chapel en le Frith? ( I know Buxton can get cut-off) Looking to spend £350,000 or so . Very open minded as to type of house .Location is more important. We are relatively young/fit/active retired . I'd like to be able to see hills and trees from my windows...I hate living in suburbia (was born and bred in the country)
But given that we would hope to live out our declining years wherever we go, it cannot be too remote and must have reasonable public transport, ideally Dr Library, local shop. And access to theatre etc , airport, rail service to London (hence Manchester)

Hmmm not going to get a lot for your money in the 'nice' places South of manchester. Wilmslow etc.
some nice places just near to Crewe, wistaston, Willaston, nantwich, where your money will stretch a bit further
A quick nip on the train to Manchester from all those places

adsy · 19/02/2015 18:11

You might be better off round Macclesfield if you want good transport links . I think it's direct train line to London and Manchester from Macclesfield.
This looks lovely

adsy · 19/02/2015 18:12

In fact, could you all club together to buy me that house. Please.

adsy · 19/02/2015 18:16

Poynton is nice. easy links, just south of Stockport.
Nice view of canal

Adsy's house is gorgeous!

Why did I go into nursing? Shall I put in a cheeky offer of £34.78 plus two annoying cats? You don't know if you don't ask Grin

morningtoncrescent62 · 19/02/2015 18:27

Loving the red, pink and purple look in that house!

Deliaskis · 19/02/2015 18:28

We're in Bollington near Macclesfield and it's great. A villagey feel but actually quite big so enough happening, restaurants, pubs etc. and a real sense of community, but train from Macclesfield (10 mins away) to London in under 2 hours.

You should be able to find something with country views etc. and reasonable size for your money. You would get slightly more for your money in Macclesfield itself thought, just because it is a definite 'town' rather than village (Bollington isn't really a village anymore either, but feels a lot like one).

Chapel en le Frith also nice, and perhaps look at Disley (right on the edge of Lyme Park), Whaley Bridge etc.

adsy · 19/02/2015 18:33

How about Wilmslow? Good transport again, and lots of shops etc. in the centre

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 19/02/2015 18:34

Poynton is nice but the traffic on the A6 from Manchester/Stockport can be bad and then again going into the village at Poynton. Not too bad if you're not commuting though. There is an amazing bonfire and firework display at Poynton Pool though!

You are also close to the rear of Lyme Park which is fantastic for long walks. Doesn't get too busy if you go in the the rear and head over the hills.

SpodoKomodo · 19/02/2015 18:35

I'm in marple bridge, it's lovely but pricey. Excellent transport links to manchester. 350k should definitely get you something decent but you would get more for your money in Marple, New Mills or Glossop

SpodoKomodo · 19/02/2015 18:38

Just to add, we're renting at the moment and hoping to buy next year. Hence looking for more for our money!

18yearstooold · 19/02/2015 18:40

I would have a look at glossop

gobbynorthernbird · 19/02/2015 18:54

Have a look at Lymm, OP.

JudgeRinderSays · 19/02/2015 19:23

I though 'south of Manchester' was going to be a euphemism for what you might allow on a second date!

Bogeyface · 19/02/2015 19:31

Have you thought about somewhere more in the Midlands? That way you are halfway between the two.

There are some really lovely places, with good house prices too. Lichfield is very nice as are some of villages around there.

Mabelface · 19/02/2015 19:37

Glossop is lovely, Chapel has a better secondary school, new Mills too. Macclesfield has some excellent schools. I live in Glossop. If you're going to commute, do it by train add traffic in and out is horrendous.

Reenskar · 19/02/2015 20:15

Can't go wrong with the villages outside Chester in my view! 2 hours to London on train, North Wales on your doorstep, 40 mins to Manchester/Liverpool.

seesensepeople · 19/02/2015 20:23

i would suggest chesterfield. a market town with good facilities, 1 hour by train to manchester and less than 2 hours to london. a lot cheaper than other parts of derbyshire as well...

Postchildrenpregranny · 19/02/2015 20:49

We live in the Midlands now Bogeyface . Cant afford to move more out into Warwickshire countryside-it's a lot pricier than where we are (for a similar house at least £75,000 more And we'd like to realise some capital) .And a lot pricier than Up North. And having done a cost/benefit analysis , being nearer DD2 would be a benefit
Cheshire (and Lymm ) is lovely but no real hills And it isn't cheap .
I'm a tad aged/long married to be dating JudgeRinder!
No commuting, so traffic not too much of an issue

cartoonsaveme · 19/02/2015 20:57

You'd get plenty of house for 350 in Macc

Postchildrenpregranny · 19/02/2015 21:00

Love that house adsy . The right sort of size . Think I might look at Macclesfield and Glossop ..and Bollinton, Poynton and Disley .. Schools not an issue for us but need to bear in mind possible need to sell later .
Not looking to do it for another year(DD1 hoping to buy in London, DD2 in Manchester this year . Can take only so much stress . And want to off- load their 'stuff' , and preferably some furniture onto them )

OP posts:
lertgush · 19/02/2015 22:55

Noooo don't look at south of Manc. Look at the Peak District if you want hills.

If I moved back to the UK I'd go for the Peak. Pubs, walks, hills, nice cities nearby.

Postchildrenpregranny · 19/02/2015 23:21

Well I do sort of mean the White Peak area/Goyt valley . Used to live in Nottingham and went walking a lot in the Peak District .

OP posts:
Postchildrenpregranny · 19/02/2015 23:22

And an aunt lived in Sheffield and used to stay there as a child/teenager . Always liked it as a city.

Other areas around there which are nice are Mellor, Charlesworth, Romiley.
