to wonder if this 'proves' how 'evil' some 'food' is?

My New Year's Resolution was to stop eating anything processed, containing refined sugar, artificial sweetener or added salt and to avoid starchy carbohydrates.

I stuck to it until this weekend when I had a friend staying and somehow find myself eating pizza, cupcakes, crisps and probably a whole load of other crap, I can't remember.

I have been so ill for around 48 hours now - nausea, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, headache, either freezing or boiling. I know it sounds like gastroenteritis or something but I'm literally never ill (haven't been for well over 10 years anyway) so it seems like too big a coincidence.

Can the body somehow develop and inability to process things it doesn't normally receive?

Or could it show that we really aren't designed to eat this crap and only tolerate it because we're used to it?

I think the freezing/boiling thing suggests you've caught a bug. Although obviously it's a shock to the system if you suddenly drastically change your diet/overdo it.

CliveCussler · 17/02/2015 10:29

I think you have a bug too.

ToffeeCaramel · 17/02/2015 10:29

I don't personally believe that potatoes, wholegrain rice etc are evil, although I know it's a popular view on mn that they are

mabelbabel · 17/02/2015 10:30

Sounds more like flu/bad cold.

TheChandler · 17/02/2015 10:32

Its more likely you've caught a bug from your friend.

You're likely to lose weight initially by avoiding processed crap, but not get such an extreme reaction - its a coincidence.

MaidOfStars · 17/02/2015 10:33

Agree with others. The gastro symptoms alone might be a sign that your body doesn't tolerate crap these days, but the temperature things says bug.

londonrach · 17/02/2015 10:33

Sounds like you got a bug? Can you take yourself to bed (not good if friend there)

YouTheCat · 17/02/2015 10:33

I cut out a load of crap from my diet in June.

I had a day of eating rubbish not so long ago because I couldn't be bothered to cook and I felt awful the next day. It seems to be the processed white carbs that do it for me.

ShadowSpiral · 17/02/2015 10:33

Agree that it sounds like you've caught some sort of bug.

This is my fifth day off work with exactly the same symptoms. It's been going round my office and friendship group.

Hope you feel better soon - I think you have a bug.

Deliaskis · 17/02/2015 10:35

Well as you put 'proves' in 'these' I guess you don't mean you think it really does prove it, but I have had a similar experience to you. Last year at new year I cut out/drastically reduced sugary sweet crap, heavily processed carbs, and focussed on eating good protein, loads of veg, some dairy, some fruit but not loads, and drinking mainly water. After the sugar withdrawal (headaches, mood swings etc.) I felt so much better, and then weeks or months later, if I ate like I had previously, e.g. gone to a pub for a baguette & chips and possible a pudding later in the day, I felt like I literally couldn't move, felt sluggish, no energy, stomach pains etc. It happened a few times, so I know it's not a coincidence. I would never have been a person who said I have an 'intolerance' to bread/gluten or anything like that, I was just used to feeling kind of tired and a bit uncomfortable.

So I don't think it's 'proof' as such, but I do agree with you that we, or at least some/many of us, are just not designed to eat large quantities of the things you mentioned.

D

chimchimini · 17/02/2015 10:36

You overindulged in everything you'd given up which rather proves the point 'everything in moderation'. But for what it's worth, my money would be on a bug too.

badtime · 17/02/2015 10:37

It does sound like you have caught something.

However, even if you hadn't and it was something to do with your diet, that wouldn't prove anything about food being 'evil'. If someone changes their diet suddenly and drastically, that can lead to severe short-term digestive symptoms, which can have knock-on effects to other aspects of health (e.g. diarrhoea can lead to dehydration which can lead to headaches). This can apply to someone going from junk to nourishing vegetables just as easily as the opposite direction.

adsy · 17/02/2015 10:44

can you tell me the "science" behind avoiding starchy carbohydrates?
Also, what is a white carb thecat? I'd be interested in seeing the different chemical structures of "white" and "whatever you think the other sort is" carbohydrate

MuttersDarkly · 17/02/2015 10:45

When I came home from globetrotting back in the 90s I discovered my home had gone Healthy + Vegetarian behind my back.

My poor intestines took a beating as they took their own sweet time to adapt to a high fibre (fecking lentils and assorted other pulses), vegetable laden diet. Tummy ache, feeling under the weather, occasionally dizzy, headaches, going to the loo was an "adventure", not much fun. Not to mention the farting. I was practically jet propelled.

That doesn't prove that chickpeas are the devil's spawn, or that carrots are Satan's Penis Substitutes To Fuck With You.. Just that any dramatic overnight change can leave your digestive system a tad grouchy.

Although I agree with the others that you have systems of a temp, and it's probably a bug.

SteveBrucesNose · 17/02/2015 10:46

Away from the likelihood that this is a bug, I could similarly 'prove' that healthy eating is bad for you on the same score.

For the last 5 days I've eaten nothing processed, lots of veg, lots of lean meat. Few carbs. I've spent most of the day today in the toilets shitting my guts out with an upset stomach. My stomach has been so bloated I'm wearing my elasticates waistband skirt that my thankfully female colleague refers to as my 'period skirt' as usually the only time I wear it is on the first day of my period when I'm bloated. Does that prove healthy eating is bad for you? Nope, it proves ice had a shock to the system. And I've likely got a bit of a tummy bug.

kali110 · 17/02/2015 10:48

I had this at xmas. 10 days. I had influenza! It's going around. Really weird strain according to the doctor!

Hakluyt · 17/02/2015 10:49

It's a bug. Honest.

kali110 · 17/02/2015 10:49

If not, it's a bug not 'the evil food'

manicinsomniac · 17/02/2015 10:57

haha ok, fair enough, it's a bug. Very odd timing though.

MrsTedCrilly · 17/02/2015 11:06

I agree with the others, but you are right about feeling crap in general! I have done the exact same as you, cut crap and carbs since NY then have just now had a few days off.. I feel sick, tummy ache, itchy skin, horrible fullness after a meal.. It really reminds you why you quit the stuff. Back to it! Wink

MuttersDarkly · 17/02/2015 11:18

It's not odd timing love.

Humans do love a pattern and like to join dots to make a connection, but basically it's not love that is all around us, it's random coincidence. They are everywhere. And we have a human urge to try and make sense out them where really it's just "shit happens".

Plus at this time of year, getting a bug isn't exactly an astronomical odds against sort of bet.

Nor is a minor junky food binge in a country where the supermarkets are well stocked with the stuff.

londonrach · 17/02/2015 11:22

Not odd timing everyone i know is ill at the moment. Theres some horrible bugs out there. Hope you feeling better soon op xxx.

Lovemycatsandkids · 17/02/2015 11:22

Ou have a bug!

And the absolute bollocks spouted about food over the years makes me tired.

Eat everything in moderation. Enjoy alcohol sensibly and generally move more than you eat.

And ultimately just like the food bores and the keep fit fanatics the slobs and the slim the you will surely die.
