To wonder what constitutes an 'Mumsnet storm'? (Royal related)

Apparently.

I've just started reading Catherine Mayer's new book about Prince Charles. There is a passage in the prologue about criticism of the the Cambridges' March 2014 trip to the Maldives (leaving baby George at home) which the author calls 'a manufactured tempest in a child's teacup'.

Discussion of Netmums, Mumsnet, Twitter.

Then the following;

"Had there been outrage on Mumsnet? Not according to Katie O'Donovan, Mumsnet's head of communications, who emails that there were 'just over 300 responses, which isn't really a "storm" by Mumsnet's standards. Not at all unanimous criticism of the couple.....'."

So how many comments makes a storm? I'm curious now.

I'm getting married next month and we've put a lovely poem in with the invitations explaining nicely why we'd like cash instead of presents. I've also asked my bridesmaid to organise a hen night in Tuscany with champagne and a spa. I'm sure my friends will be delighted to cover my costs as a special treat for me during my speshul year of speshulness.........

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/the_royal_family

A tumbleweed topic. No storms there, just those who want to chat about them (in a positive kinda way). But barely used.

(Set up for Royalists at time of the Royal wedding, to keep threads together and avoid pissing off all the MNetters who couldn't give a stuff and wanted to hide the whole shebang easily).

I know, it's odd. Where are these people ? In rl people post cute pictures of chocolate faced babies toothlessly grinning at the camera, it's a rite of passage. In MN land it's abuse.

For a storm, you need to have loads of deleted comments and most contributors need to feel proper dirty (and not in a sexy way) after.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 16/02/2015 17:25

Yeah, you need to have loads of:

'Where has the op fucked off to?' as well, as the OP cowers in her mum and baby parking space EVEN THOUGH HER BABY IS TWELVE.

For a real good storm, you need to have a few unexpected twists and turns.

eg. "G-MIL just texted DH and said, "I told you the Maldives were shite, you're just a balding lazy sponger like your father."

But never mention it in the op.

Eg. Mil gave me chocolate. Again. Should I cut contact?

  • Cor I could do with some chocolate.
  • You're lucky to have a Mil. My mil is dead.
  • I blame your DH
  • You have ishooos.
  • You should cut contact. For her sake.

7 pages later.

Oh, didn't I say? chocolate turns me into a werewolf. The last time mil gave me chocolate I ate all the grandchildren while howling at the moon.

  • Ah.
