First post.

Now it may be me who is U and in fact just the uncultered idiot i suspect myself to be and id love to be corrected if thats the case.

Concerns art. Mate (good job but not mega rich) has bought a piece of art. I commented that it was v nice and asked how much she paid. £1000 and a further £150 to frame it!!!!!!!

Its a print so not even original! I asked why she wouldnt have just tried to get it printed herself and frame it with nice frame? Same thing surely? She said that it wouldnt be a "collectable" then and didnt really understand my point? She is buying a second one in a few months.

Aibu to think she has flushed £ down the toilet effectively?!

Yes she mentioned his convictions. Made me more Hmm about it but she said she liked it over and above him being well known.

But its not your money. OR your things, or your house, or your business. I'm really struggling to see why you have an opinion at all on this?

Squooosh its exactly this attitude that annoys me. I suspect my friend belongs to this school of thought and it is quite snobby imo. Her parents are loaded and gave her a dozen or so of these so-callled pieces by different artists (wouldnt know who they are as i am clearly a pleb) so i guess she is just forced to buy poncey art!!!

I couldn't give a flying fig whether you think it's a snobby attitude or not. I suspect your friend would feel the same.

I'm glad you're happy with your Ikea prints. I wouldn't be. People have different tastes in art and frankly your reaction to the way your friend chooses to spend her money is a bit strange.

Reverse snobbery is just as bad OP. AS is slagging off your friends online for having more different taste to you.

No need to get personal. As i said in my op i was willing to educate myself. I just think the main reason ppl 'invest' in this stuff is to show off. My friend was clearly delighted when i asked how much it was, despite feining embarrassment at the cost. Bless her!

And maybe people buy art because they like the piece?

I'm surprised you can stand up straight with that massive shoulder chip weighing you down. Do you even like your friend?

You aren't really though, are you? You've been told yabu and you are now calling your friend poncey and snobby. I don't see you learning much.

I don't get why people buy generic artwork from places like Ikea. It's so unimaginative. I'd rather have nothing on my walls too.

I only have original works of art in my house (or limited run prints). None of them cost a lot of money. Some of them were given to me by relatives running out of wall space. Or for birthday/Christmas presents. (Friends & family know my taste in art.)

It has nothing to do with showing off. It's everything to do with indulging my love of art and turning my house into a beautiful space which reflects my personality.

Awake - er maybe because places like ilea are affordable? Newsflash but not everyone can afford to put lowry on their walls. And fwiw i think ilea and the like are great for producing tasteful affordable items which look just as good as more expensive places for a fraction of the price.

Etsy is a great website for affordable, yet not mass produced prints.

Well unless she borrowed the money off you to pay for it then it's nothing to do with you.
You don't sound like a very nice friend - are you perhaps a bit jealous?
You think Ikea is " just as good" but not everyone does. If this makes your friend happy the why can't you be happy for her?

So to extend your logic, everyone should just paint all their walls white, have standard issue white basic kitchens and bathrooms, and buy all their furniture in Ikea? Because spending a penny more than on the most basic cheap and nasty available is flushing money down the drain?

Can you really not comprehend that your taste in art could be slightly different to someone elses? And that your ikea tat prints might not be what everyone else wants on their walls?

DoJo, nothing rude about it. I just think the money would be better spent on other things.

Such as?

For a (from what i can tell) left wing site, you're all pretty materialistic. What if i were to tell you my friend is a tory-voting art budding collecter!!

I am joking of course. Just no need to be so cutting. reclines into crp furniture.

'What if i were to tell you my friend is a tory-voting art budding collecter!!'

I'd say 'that's nice'. Tory voters aren't exactly rare. I believe I've even met one or two in real life. Imagine that!

If you'd told me your friend was a cross dressing druid called Hilda I'd find that slightly more noteworthy.

Dojo its not my business to discuss my friends financial situation but she does say she would like to send her ds to private school when he is older but thinks she wouldnt be able to afford it. It seems quite important to her so i dont see why she doesnt pool the money from all this art to pay for it.

OP you really don't want to listen do you. None of my art was expensive. Every piece brings my house to life.

If you don't want to spend much try a local arts & crafts fair. Or a car boot sale. Or even consider making your own artwork.

(I have nothing against Ikea by the way. I own some Ikea furniture.)

You clearly don't care about art. Which is fine. Just don't judge those of us who do.

It's not an any wing site. Its a huge number of different people from all over the world, with disparate values and ideals. I love Ikea for example, and am sitting under an Ikea picture right now. On an ikea couch. With my feet on an ikea coffee table over an Ikea rug.
And its still a pretty much unanimous YABU for you.

I've got a few original paintings. The best find was a small watercolour which was a bloody bargain at £15 (in an eBay auction). DP framed it for me for Christmas.
