Which means that some people before you can't get anywhere to sit. Happened today in Waitrose where the naice people should kmow better. Do you think people should wait until they have their food before getting a table or Aibu. Talking about YOU lady with the red shoes in malvern today

I never thought this was a thing until I joined Mumsnet. I think it's one of those things people get bothered about when they have nothing else to get worked up about.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2015 08:16

Eating in supermarket cafes is very overrated. Especially if it's packed out and there's a queue a mile long at the counter.

Just go to the pub/home.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 15/02/2015 08:22

Yawn. This old Chesnut rearing it's ugly head again.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 15/02/2015 08:26

*its

ELR · 15/02/2015 08:30

I go one step further and leave my coat to secure the table, I don't mind if I offend.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2015 08:30

It's been a good week scrambled, There was a cat poo in the garden thread a few days ago.

Haven't seen a 'shoes in or off in the house' one for a while. Must be time. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2015 08:30

*on

UncleT · 15/02/2015 08:31

It is - and yet again an obvious majority think it's absolutely fine to do it.

Mehitabel6 · 15/02/2015 08:31

It comes up regularly. Those of us who save tables still save them, those who tut still tut!
Rather like the shoes on carpet threads- I see them as very similar and they are both with us for as long as MN is, without anyone changing their mind.

Mehitabel6 · 15/02/2015 08:32

Lovely to know the majority go with common sense UncleTom.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2015 08:33

Not sure about leaving my personal belongings on a chair in a v busy cafe even if it's empty.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2015 08:34

Sorry meant or not even. Not making much sense this morning. Grin

PossumPoo · 15/02/2015 08:35

When dh and l do this l just know there's someone in line having a moan about it thanks to MN! Smile

Purpleflamingos · 15/02/2015 08:38

YABU.
There's no reason why a queue needs more than one person in it.
My mum is disabled, she prefers to try and walk with sticks 'for the excercise' as opposed to sitting in a wheelchair. She doesn't need to stand in a queue if she can can sit instead.
Likewise if I queued with 6ft plus nephew who is always in my way I'd never see the hot food menu as I'm a short 5 ft barely something.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2015 08:42

Good Housekeeping say no

UncleT · 15/02/2015 08:45

Erm, no. That's a different question being answered there, nothing to do with being with someone else. It's talking about sticking your possessions on a seat to snag a table rather than have someone sit at it.

CoffeeBeanMonster · 15/02/2015 08:46

We normally save a table but only if there are loads of seats.

I wouldn't go somewhere that was too full to guarantee a seat.

WhereIsMyFurryHat · 15/02/2015 08:46

Always nab a table while someone else queues.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2015 08:47

Erm ok Uncle. Grin Weirdly the internet is not awash with articles on this sort of serious problem. Grin

ChillieJeanie · 15/02/2015 08:52

It's the same principle though UncleT. I don't usually have someone with me, so the only way I would be able to save a table is to put my coat on the chair. Why is it okay to claim a table if there is more than one person, but not if you're on your own? In my experience, recounted earlier, I used my coat to claim a table when I had already ordered and was waiting at the counter for my drink to be made up. The person who grumbled to their companion about the table having been taken had only just walked in and neither person had joined the queue to place an order. Why should they be able to claim a table ahead of me just because there were two of them and I only had my coat to stake a claim?

UncleT · 15/02/2015 08:56

It obviously isn't the same principle at all. Your coat isn't a paying customer occupying a seat.

Sparklingbrook · 15/02/2015 08:58

True, and anyone can just chuck it on the floor and sit down if they so wish I guess.

Only on MN does this appear to cause so many problems...

PrimalLass · 15/02/2015 08:59

The table martyrs aren't explaining what to do with children in the queue.

realgonekid84 · 15/02/2015 08:59

so by the logic of I wouldn't buy food if I couldn't secure a seat than what are single people meant to do. Ok they could ask to share another table but that isn't always possible. However, pre dc I would have throught reserving a table to be unfair bug with dc it makes more sense. So I am sat on the fence with this kne.

realgonekid84 · 15/02/2015 09:00

but and one.
