Cinema prices

LittleMissRayofHope · 14/02/2015 08:32

Wondering what to do with the toddler today, thought 'oh yes! Props pig movie just came out!'
So go to check prices, nearest cinema is Cineworld.
£10.40 for me, £7.10 for her!!

Maybe it's been that long since I've been to the cinema but I'm gobsmacked at how expensive it is!!
And doubly gobsmacked that they would actually charge full adult rate for this type of film. It's not as if I actually want to see it, I'm just the guardian basically!
Sad as I simply can't afford that much for a film!!

Expensive and tbh I would rather watch a film at home, no strangers pushing passed us at the last minute, eating, slurping and coughing etc.
And the snacks and drinks are way cheaper :)

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 14/02/2015 19:40

Stevie there is the showcase in Bellevue that's at least a third cheaper but it's harder for us to get to. Vue at the Lowry have discounts on old films on weekend mornings and term breaks. Still cost me £20+ though.

CremeEggThief · 14/02/2015 19:57

YANBU. Our local cinema's kids' club is £4 per person!Shock

Vagndidit · 14/02/2015 20:04

I tend to go to the local Vue cinema using Nectar points for tickets. We smuggle in snacks from the pound shop down the road Wink

Isithappening · 14/02/2015 21:34

Stevie: vue do kids am, tickets are £1.75.

southeastastra · 14/02/2015 21:39

when i go to the pics it's always empty so they need to make up the balance somehow. it's a bit depressing really but films that people want to see just aren't being made. too many people involved in one film taking all control out of any artistic vision. it's depressing.

isthisjustfantasy · 14/02/2015 21:41

Cineworld are only charging child prices for everyone to see Peppa Pig. I know because I have booked to take my 2 year old to see it on wednesday. You are right though, it's still overpriced especially when you factor in cost of snacks and drinks.

ToBeeOrNot · 14/02/2015 21:52

YANBU

We just have cinema nights at home now, things are out on DVD so quickly it doesn't feel like we're missing out.

I'm quite happy to wait 4 months to watch something e.g. I noticed that Gone Girl is now out in Tesco for £10 on DVD.

Some of the things we may have paid to see at the cinema recently, by the time we'd thought about it and looked for an evening to go, they'd already stopped showing the film. Lots of stuff only seems to be on for a couple of weeks now.

lomega · 14/02/2015 22:17

yadnbu. I refuse to go to the cinema because of how much of a blatant rip off it is.

For my DH and I to see a film at my local cinema, it would cost £15 just for the tickets, and then at least another £5-8 for a drink and snack each. That's our electric bill for a fortnight there, we cannot afford to go. So we just pay for netflix and watch films on there. I don't care about seeing 'new releases' or anything, and it's nice to go if it's a birthday or special occasion, but other than that it just seems to be a massive waste of money.

Our local cinema have started searching people too, to make sure you're not sneaking in your own snacks! Which is fair enough I suppose, but £3 for a share bag of Maltesers? Come on!

chocolateorsalad · 14/02/2015 22:55

YANBU.

Took DS to see Paddington and it was £17. That included the tiniest tray of popcorn, biscuit and drink.

BTW the Peppa Pig "movie" is old episodes with a new 15 minute episode. Not worth paying to see one new episode!

ninilegsintheair · 14/02/2015 23:15

Having kids showings is all very well, but our local cineworld shows films that are came out quite a while back (Box trolls at the moment). DD really wants to see Peppa Pig but we'll have to wait until it starts on the kids shows rather than general release.

I have a student card and the prices are still far too expensive. We rarely go to the cinema now as we just can't afford to make it a regular thing.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 14/02/2015 23:22

I only take DD on a tuesday as its about £5.70 all day. Thats the local cineworld.

Thats why people download them so much illegally. Some families cant afford £30 for a cinema trip.

BackforGood · 14/02/2015 23:28

tbh, I'm astounded that so many cinemas are still in business. It is extortionately expensive to go to the cinema, especially when you consider how widely available films now are on things like Film4, before you get into things like Netflix, 'buying' the film from Sky or Virgin or whoever your provider is, or even buying the DVD - all of which can be watched by several people for a fraction of the price. I wonder who all these people are who pay out so much money as regularly as they do.

Do agree with the kids club showings for the OP though.

DustyCropHopper · 14/02/2015 23:37

Our local cinema is £2.50 per person in the week and £3.50 at the weekend. It makes it affordable for us to go at least once most school holidays. Our closest 'big' cinema is 15 miles away, we only go there maybe once a year, if that.

MoustacheofRonSwanson · 15/02/2015 07:13

Cineworld are pretty dear per ticket. They make a lot of money from their umlimited membersphip, so are less worried about one off custom than getting people signed up to a direct debit every month.

WyrdByrd · 15/02/2015 10:43

Do you not have any independent cinemas locally?

Ours is fantastic - went to see something with DD recently on a Wednesday (their cheaply day) & with my members discount paid less than £7.10 for two tickets & popcorn.

I very rarely bother with the multiplex now.

GooodMythicalMorning · 15/02/2015 10:52

We use The Plaza in Dorchester which is an independent one I think. Its £2.50 weekdays and £3.50 weekends and I actually prefer it to the massive Cineworlds etc. Its lovely in there and you get exactly the same things re popcorn drinks and sweets too. Shame there aren't more of these places about.

HiawathaDidntBotherTooMuch · 15/02/2015 11:04

We went to our local Empire this weekend to see Shaun the Sheep. It was brilliant. I thought it was expensive though, especially as it is an ancient, seen better days cinema. £8.25 for me and £6.25 each for the DC. We paid the same there to see Paddington, just after christmas, so i should have known. Now I see that Paddington is going to be shown in their Empire juniors Saturday morning programme, at the end of March. All tickets for empire juniors films are £1.25. I should have waited Smile

HiawathaDidntBotherTooMuch · 15/02/2015 11:06

and i always take our own sweets. I know if is considered bad form. But the good sized bags of haribo are £1 in sainsburys and we all share one.

Stevie77 · 16/02/2015 20:39

Thanks Isithappening, have just seen the Kids AM screenings at Vue

stayanotherday · 16/02/2015 20:59

Yanbu. I used to go overy week as a teenager but it's too expensive now. I joined Lovefilm and get three at a time unlimited films. Cheap and you can watch when you want. You can wear and eat what you want.

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 16/02/2015 21:19

I went to the cinema last night, £17 for tickets for DD and myself, £8 for one tub of popcorn and one drink- total rip off. I fell asleep too, so all that money for an uncomfortable snooze. I'd go to the cinema every week if it were affordable (not to see films that put me to sleep though, I didn't get to choose what we watched yesterday and animation prompts an uncanny alley reaction in me so I can't enjoy it).

manicinsomniac · 16/02/2015 21:59

Absolutely crazy. Beats me why people bother when you can get actual professional theatre tickets for not much more (if you pick your seats carefully and are organised) and amateur theatre tickets for quite a bit less.

I'm certainly not going to pay £10-12 for an on screen performance when I can get a live performance for £7-£20.

My local cineworld doesn't yet do bag checks though. I work in a boarding school and we sometimes take all the children on a Sunday afternoon - via a huge Asda to buy cheap tuck to stash in bags! If they start checking we'll probably find it's not in our weekend budgeting to go at all.

pastizzi · 16/02/2015 22:12

It's definitely extortionate to go to the cinema now. Prohibitively expensive to see any new releases.

But when we do go I save money by not buying snacks. Have never understood why people can't go 2hrs without eating.

People who bring in their own bags of popcorn are my personal bugbear. Nothing against it in principle but the loud scrunching of the supermarket bags fucks up the enjoyment of the film for a lot of people there.
