Fresh chicken breast delivered and opened on Tues, 3 breasts left were covered and stored in the fridge, am making chicken and choritzo jambalaya tonight have gone to get them out and noticed that the packaging says to consume within 24 hours of opening and now I'm unsure...Confused

It looks absolutely fine and a tentative sniff has revealed a distinct smell but not a bad one- to be fair my sense of smell is pretty heightened at the moment.

If its relevant, I am 7 weeks pregnant and DS (14 months) will also be having some.

AIBU to just go for it?

As long as they are in date and your fridge is the correct temperature they will be absolutely fine.

They just want you to throw them away and buy more.

The80sweregreat · 13/02/2015 17:30

Give them a sniff first..agree with on

crazykat · 13/02/2015 17:35

If chicken is off you wouldn't be wondering if it was okay, its the most disgusting thing I've ever smelt.

If it smells okay and has been covered and in the fridge then I'd use it but make sure it's cooked through.

CointreauVersial · 13/02/2015 17:37

They will be fine, assuming you have kept them in the fridge.

Trust your nose (if you are anything like I was when PG you'd be able to smell an off chicken in the next town).

Thanks, I've gone for it! In the event of my chicken related demise, I have asked DP to update on my behalf!Grin

They should be fine, sniff test is good and give them a wash before using.

Poyntonoldhams · 13/02/2015 17:55

don't wash raw chicken - you dont need to and just risk spreading bacteria around your sink/worktops. They get all killed off in the cooking process

dementedpixie · 13/02/2015 17:58

washing is not required. I have never washed chicken or any other meat

laughingmyarseoff · 13/02/2015 18:04

I generally just run under the tap to wash, I know chef so picked up the habit hen he showed me how to make my own curries.

dementedpixie · 13/02/2015 18:07

what is a run under the tap going to remove though? It is pointless and can spread germs round the kitchen

RoganJosh · 13/02/2015 18:11

Washing is good if they smell borderline. It would get rid of grotty old bits of blood etc. you can them have another sniff.
But as they smell fine there's no need.

FindoGask · 13/02/2015 18:15

washing raw chicken is both pointless and dangerous, and the sniff test proves nothing.

Chicken portions are usually packaged in gas-flushed packaging which has lowered oxygen content inside, inhibiting bacterial growth. So if it's opened, obviously the packaging won't work any more. However, as it's been in the fridge the whole time and assuming the OP is going to fully cook the chicken right through, it will be safe to eat.

orangefusion · 13/02/2015 18:16

No, washing meat is bad hygiene. It spreads bacteria. Cooking meat kills bacteria.

Your nose is the most effective judge of if it is ok to cook or not. If it smells wrong it is wrong.

FindoGask · 13/02/2015 18:20

that link doesn't work, I dunno why. But google sniff test food safety and get lots of similar results.

laughingmyarseoff · 13/02/2015 19:06

It's only dangerous if you splash the water according to those links, the dangers not to the chicken but bad practice washing. No one has to do the same but that's how I've always done it, obv deconned the sink after, and never had an issue.
