to not like my driving criticised by a non-driver?

Driving a friend and her friend to go and get some lunch.

I don't know this other person well at all really, anyway she was in the back talking to me and I was having to merge onto another road so I was giving it 100% attention and didn't reply.

My friend laughed and said "x I think she's trying to concentrate"

She then pipes up "Mighty are you a nervous driver? You seem like you would be a very nervous driver"

It really pissed me off.

I think it pissed me off more because she's never driven a car in her life.

Non-drivers are famous for this, especially if they're nervous passengers. It's probably a case of projection (she's nervous so she assumes you're nervous). Offer to swap and let her drive... that should shut her up.

YANBU I wouldn't like comments like that even if my passengers were drivers themselves. It's just rude.

Saying that I have a lovely friend whose driving makes me more car sick that I already am. It's like being on a fairground ride. I can't tell her though so I just do the driving usually.

TheFecklessFairy · 13/02/2015 16:43

My answer would have been to pull over and say....."As you think I am a nervous driver.......you'd better get out and walk then."

Nolim · 13/02/2015 16:45

Never drive her again

MightyMightyToros · 13/02/2015 16:47

Thank you!

I thought I was just being a bitch and too sensitive.

oh I know I was driving this person and she was making comments about my reversing skills! I asked her if she drove, and of course the answer was 'ooh yes I just have not passed my test'.
I told her to do one and never offered her another lift.

CultureSucksDownWords · 13/02/2015 16:55

What was your reply to her comment? I think even very experienced and non-nervous drivers would pause in a conversation when merging into traffic!

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 13/02/2015 16:59

YES YES YES!

My mum is the WORST passenger going. She drives herself but is so unbelievably nervous, it makes her a horrendous driver. My brother is exactly the same.

I got a new car on Wednesday and I've been a bit nervous if it but gaining my confidence, I drove us out to lunch earlier and I'm going down the road at no faster than 20 and my mum pipes up from the back 'you going fast enough?' And then when we both arrive at our destination they both tell me that I'll get used to the car but 'you're driving far too fast' I was actually making a point of not driving fast at all as I know they both go at the most frustratingly leisurely pace possible

I think I'd have made them walk home if they were non drivers giving me criticism me though!

laughingmyarseoff · 13/02/2015 17:39

YANBU, you were doing what you were supposed to do. She sounds like a typical backseat driver and a bit rude given that she's getting a lift!
