To hate the phrase "poorly sick"?

Every time I hear someone bleat the phrase "sorry to hear you're poorly sick" it makes my toes curl!!! Confused What is wrong with either "poorly" or "sick"?!! No need for both. Sound so sickenly (excuse the pun!) infantile and just ugh!

I've never heard it said before?

LuisSuarezTeeth · 10/02/2015 21:24

Yanbu - if you hate it you hate it.

hiddenhome · 10/02/2015 21:30

It sounds like a very childish phrase. I would judge an adult if I heard them coming out with that.

never once heard that, but I'm not in the UK

hiddenhome · 10/02/2015 21:31

I have actually heard the phrase 'proper poorly bad' before Confused

FelixFelix · 10/02/2015 21:32

Yes I hate it too. I'd not heard it until I moved to leeds Confused

CocktailQueen · 10/02/2015 21:33

Yep, I hate it too. I'm not a fan of 'poorly' either. 'Ill' will do, thanks.

Allstoppedup · 10/02/2015 21:33

I use it when my little boy isn't well Blush

It is infantile but applied to an infant...does that absolve me?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 10/02/2015 21:33

I'm oop north and only ever heard it said in a tongue in cheek kind of way.

gallicgirl · 10/02/2015 21:34

Surely it's only used sarcastically or with children?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 10/02/2015 21:34

Sick, ill, not well, poorly. Bet there's a few more synonyms too. Anyone?

jimmycrackcornbutidontcare · 10/02/2015 21:39

I have never heard it. It sounds like a phrase someone made up. It'll probably not catch on.

WitchWay · 10/02/2015 21:39

My mother says it Hmm

AmIthatHot · 10/02/2015 21:43

I've never heard it, but would probably imagine those using it refer to food as yummy too. Baby talk

MrsTawdry · 10/02/2015 21:43

YANBU in fact "poorly" alone makes me want to twat someone. Just say unwell ffs!

Primadonnagirl · 10/02/2015 21:47

It's meant ironically. Like saying you've got a hurty finger or something. Hopefully people don't ring in to work and say to their boss with all seriousness " I'm poorly sick today!"

NutcrackerFairy · 10/02/2015 21:48

Hate 'poorly' too.

So twee and childish.

Postchildrenpregranny · 10/02/2015 21:48

Hospitals use it . It often means 'at death's door but we don't want to say so ' IME

Eustasiavye · 10/02/2015 21:49

I've only heard it when speaking to a child and so don't mind it.

Birdsgottafly · 10/02/2015 21:49

It's been said across Yorkshire for at least 50 years.

It's passed through Lancashire.

I like it if it's said by a "cuddly Nan" type of woman ( think Lisa Dingle), makes me feel cared about.

There seems to be a lot of dislike for Northern sayings, on here.

WorraLiberty · 10/02/2015 21:50

Yes I meant to say, the word 'poorly' makes me want to put someone out of their misery.

maitaimojito · 10/02/2015 21:54

It is a Yorkshire phrase - I've heard 'poorly, sick and dying' before.

Like others have said, I think it's supposed to be said ironically. I've only ever heard people of my parents' generation or older say it.

badRoly · 10/02/2015 21:57

I use poorly sick and poorly bad. I am from Yorkshire. I'm probably very irritating.
