To not watch 'The Wire' or 'Breaking Bad' mainly because DH will not stop badgering me!?

I will get round to watching them IF and WHEN I feel like it.

I started watching both of them and was put off because though they were well scripted and directed they were just about men and drugs and crime and just ... not what I wanted to watch. To be honest I don't think I need to justify myself.

But dh cannot stfu - if he just stated - these are great programmes you should really watch them as they are brilliant etc. that would be fine. But it feels like he is judging me for not watching them... gah! It is watching TV not frickin' voting! Gives me the rage. Honestly dh should know me better than that really. I am very stubborn so if I feel I am being pressured I am prone to being less likely to do something just out of sheer arsey-ness (a bit like dh!)

So when I am watching netflix on my tablet while in the kitchen, cooking, washing up hiding from the children and if I want to watch 'The Good Wife' (even if I have seen it before) - I bloody well should be able to without dh tsking - [stamps foot petulantly] Angry

I think it is partly because I like programmes where women are the central character and I am willing to watch slightly less coherent well written drama for that. Also I like something I can watch in the kitchen with children milling around without fear of traumatising them Hmm

What is wrong with not watching something? I don't force dh to watch things or judge his choices - but despite warnings he can't let it lie!

I've watched neither too mainly for the same reasons OP. I also tend to did my heels in when told to so something. One by one my friends have succumbed to BB and I can't even get past the titles. I do however watch The Returned constantly instead. Love it!

Brummiegirl15 · 10/02/2015 22:38

Another one here for House of Cards.

Absolutely superb and Robin Wright and Kate Mara both have strong characters although as PP said , the main character is male.

But it's outstanding and worth watching

Fairylea · 10/02/2015 22:38

I can understand how annoying it is to have him keep going on at you..... but....

Breaking bad is amazing!!! Everyone MUST watch it. .seriously.

Plus you're wrong if you think it's all men and drugs..It really isn't. Skylar is possibly just as important to the story as Walt as is the impact on his family and life and then you have the whole other storyline going on with his sister in law etc etc. You're seriously missing out.

I also adore orange is the new black and bates motel. Both totally brilliant.

But yes you must watch breaking bad. And then better call Saul.

Sorry. I'm not helpful am I? !

Brummiegirl15 · 10/02/2015 22:41

Also love Scandal. Strong central female character ( and others) and African American.

Apparently Scandal is the only prime-time drama currently broadcasting with an African-American female in the main lead role, which is incredible in this day and age.

TheCatAteMyTaxReturn · 10/02/2015 22:50

YANBU

'The Wire' and 'Breaking Bad' are excellent episodes of television, IMO, and your OP says you've tried to watching them, but not found them to your taste.

Which is fine.

Your viewing choices are precisely that. Yours Smile

MrsTerryPratchett · 10/02/2015 22:53

I just finished Veronica Mars. Again. Haven't watched The Wire or Breaking Bad. I like shit to pass the Bechdel Test. Also, I would do things to Jason Dohring.

Upatree · 10/02/2015 22:55

YABU (somewhat). Breaking Bad is by far the best series I've ever watched and I loved watching it with my OH.

As for The Wire...I've heard so many positive things about it but I haven't managed to get into it yet - I watched the first episode and really struggled to understand the accents. I think I may have to try again with subtitles...

I hate it when stuff gets built up and up. You gotta watch this show!!! It's like caviar and doughnuts and prosecco and Tom Selleck's broad rippling shoulders all in one!! You will LITERALLY have a huge thundering orgasm from the wit and insight on display in the VERY FIRST FIVE LINES of this show!! It's like Disneyland in space with unlimited income for life and wall-to-wall carpets or parquet if you like that sort of thing!!! All-inclusive world cruise with beer on tap and intellectual conversation with senior civil servants who share your interest in equestrian sport and can do the Times crossword in pen!!!!!

Then you watch the show and it's a nice cup of tea and a high-end beef and horseradish sandwich, but still not what you were sold.

Bettercallsaul1 · 11/02/2015 09:02

The Analyst Grin I know what you mean, but BB really is all those things - and more!

maleenteringfemalefacilities · 11/02/2015 09:09

YABVVVVVVVU to say Buffy is lesser quality though. Joss Whedon is a god & Buffy is amazing.
(BB & Wire resister here, for the same reasons as TheAnalyst - overselling pisses me off!)

Theoretician · 11/02/2015 09:19

Don't bother with breaking bad I forced myself to watch five episodes and they were shit, such a waste of time

I think Breaking Bad does build momentum with time. I usually say that people need to make it to the end of the first series (episode 8?) then they will be hooked enough. (It continues to improve after that.) (But I see someone else gave up during series three - does not compute.)

I gave my mother the DVD box set. Apparently she told my sister that she couldn't see what the fuss was about, after a few episodes, but now she's hooked.

diddl · 11/02/2015 09:27

I haven't watched either of them either!

Well, have seen 3eps of The Wire & am not interested in watching any more.

Have seen bits of BB as husband has watched it, but it doesn't interest me at all.

I don't get the hype at all.

Although I can see that the idea behind BB was a great one.

I thought that The Killing was great.

Currently loving Spiral.

I doubt I'm the only one.

But I'm sure there are plenty of folk who aren't bothered!

Theoretician · 11/02/2015 09:28

we loved Buffy, The Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars

I liked all of those, especially Gilmore Girls, so as we clearly have exactly the same tastes, I can tell you that you must watch the Wire and Breaking Bad.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 11/02/2015 09:40

I think what the analyst is saying though (and i agree) is that if you oversell then it puts pressure on the prog and the viewer. I am sure BB is great but it is an irritant for me due to the constant superlatives applied.

Sorry I should have separated out Buffy ss of course that is fantastic tv that never got oversold...

Jason Dohring... Sigh. I want to do bad things to him maybe with the homo erotic brothers from Supernatural (now that prog is all about the menz).

I know how you feel, the more DH pesters me to watch something the less I want to! I think it's because I'm a very distracted viewer, I feel almost trapped if I have to sit in rapt attention to something and of course if DH wants me to LOVE something he is always glancing at me to see what I'm doing at parts he likes and GOD that stresses me out! Bless him he just wants to share but I like to flick through a magazine or something while TV is on. Tbh he's always refused to watch the West Wing which I love. I just hate enforced TV watching!

TheComfortOfStrangers · 11/02/2015 10:20

YANBU, there is nothing more annoying than being badgered like that, and I, too, would dig my heels in rather than give in to it. Heck, it's about discouraging that sort of behaviour as much as anything.

But!

BB and the Wire are both fantastic shows. BB is my favourite TV experience ever, and as a remote stranger I'd gently encourage anyone vaguely interested to watch.

Good quality shows/series with strong or at least equal female presence: The Returned, The Honourable Woman, Spiral, The Bridge, The Killing, Borgen, House of Cards

Bifauxnen · 11/02/2015 10:41

Yanbu. I've avoided the wire, bb and mad men. I just don't feel compelled to watch.
I've been watching Gotham though, because I'm rooting for the penguin. You probably wouldn't like it.

CastielsClevererBetterSister · 11/02/2015 11:14

I watched BB for about 5 episodes and I don't remember anything about them except there was a bloke with a shifty house and he was trying to make money .....yawn dozed off. Seriously don't get the hype.
Supernatural however I agree (note the name ) is all about that testosterone fest that is Sam and mostly Dean. Love the storylines, they just keep spiralling. Love them so much I bought them on blueray to enjoy Jensen Ackles the stories over and over again.

Fabulassie · 11/02/2015 12:48

One reason I took a long time to start watching BB was that I'm used to people hyping shows that I think are pretty shit. Never did care for Lost or The Walking Dead (and I gave that a good three seasons!). Most shows are actually a bit crap. They may start out pretty good and then turn to shit (Homeland, Dexter, Sons of Anarchy) but they're rarely that good for long. BB was actually really great. It started off OK, quickly got good, and got better and better.

I'm thinking of getting into Game of Thrones but I half expect to be disappointed.

BrianButterfield · 11/02/2015 12:57

I put off Game of Thrones because I thought I couldn't live up to the hype, but we loved it in the end and watched four seasons in about two weeks ago!

PuppyMonkey · 11/02/2015 13:05

Sob, I so miss Jesse Pinkman.

Carry on...

Fabulassie · 11/02/2015 13:06

I'm hoping Jesse makes an appearance on Better Call Saul. So far we've got Mike and Tuco!

PuppyMonkey · 11/02/2015 13:15

Haven't watched Better Call Saul yet - want to wait till there are more episodes to binge watch. Smile

Awww, be lovely to see Mike again... Surely Gus will turn up too?

Mousefinkle · 11/02/2015 13:22

Yanbu. I can't comment on the wire but I did try watching breaking bad after hearing raving reviews from just about everyone and I thought it was utter shit. I felt really let down by it actually after expecting "the best TV series ever made" as a few had told me Hmm.

Watch House Of Cards! That's good TV, or Orange is the new black which is practically an all female cast and utterly brilliant.
