We are moving in a few weeks.

I would like to give our house a name, but DF laughed and said 'oooh how snobby'.

Has anyone house got a house name?

The reason older properties have names rather than numbers is because they weren't all built at the same time.
So Meadowview was built on a lane then a bit further down Hilltop was built a bit later on, and so on over the years as the gaps were filled in.

Same applies now to self builds etc but to add a name to a house that from the moment the foundations were laid has had a number allocated and actually expect people to use it (stick whatever plaques you like outside) is naff

Our house has a name, and no number - as do all the houses on our (rather long) road - drives delivery drivers mad.

It's an appropriate historical name for the building though - along the lines of "Old Forge House" -but not that.

I agree that a house name lends a certain ambience to an address, people often comment on ours. I'm not that snobby honestly! Grin

I came across one today called Sevenay, which I thought was quite nice until I saw the house number - 7A Grin

I want to give our house a name, but DH won't let me Sad

I'm cringing reading this as our house has a name but there is a story to it.

DH and his old school friend had a den as kids which they named Grythebourne. They don't know where that name came from (although they were most likely stoned at the time). When DH's friend bought his first home he put up a plaque calling it Grythebourne. Unfortunately for me when we bought our first home, a 1980s semi, he bought us a plaque saying New Grythebourne. As they're life long friends I felt I couldn't say no to it going up and there it has stayed. Where we live is not at all prestigious so the neighbours must think we're a bit la-dee-dar.
I'm hoping we won't need to take it to our next house!

After our next door neighbour's wife died, he changed the name of the house to Dunerin.

We always wondered.....

How Chavvie and totally uncool - don't do it.

Sorry to be an uncool chav but we gave our house a name when we moved in last year. Had it changed at the local authority, post office and land registry, all for free. We did have to keep the number though.
Some might cringe but we like it. And it is a 1930 built heap not a 1970s semi, so we're partially redeemed. Grin

Only partially. 1930s is hardly old.

That's ok we don't mind. It sets off the personalised regs nicely.

There's a village near us which is completely new. The developers called one of the roads in it "Quidditch Lane". Some people in thag road have given names to their houses such as "The Muggles", "The Golden Snitch" etc. Confused

They also had a competition for local school children to name the two lakes in the village. The lakes are now called "Whomping Willow Lake" and"Lake Sirius". Smile

The village I live in has quite a few houses with names rather than numbers. But they tend to be the older properties.

Does anyone else feel like rebelliously naming their house after Tara's post?Grin

We have a house name as our house was built after the others on the street

It's bloody annoying and I spend too much time explaining to people where it is as there's no numbering with it.

We've just bought a house next to a park. You'll never guess what it's called...

It's not old but was given the name when built. All the houses on our lane have names rather than numbers.

I don't care if your house has a name as long as it also has a number, clearly displayed so I can find it if I come to visit.

Do what you want OP.

All these old houses with names were new houses with names once upon a time.

There's a house near me with a big metal sign on the wall with the owners names on it. Think 'Ken and Irene' in big swirly letters. It might not be for everybody but their post never goes next door by mistake.

Our house is called Rubery according to the plaque on the fence, have to say though never used it and didnt even know it had a name until after we moved in, have no idea what it means, will google it one day, can't believe names affect house prices Hmm

Apparently Rubery is the name of a village in Bromsgrove and means "a rough hill" Interiors.

I'm sure I remember a poster on MN talking about a house in their area called 'Thistledome'. They'd imagined it had something to do with prickly wild plants until they spoke to the owner who explained they'd viewed it and thought 'This'll do me' and bought it Grin

Our house has a name but it's had the same one on the Land Registry since the 18th century. That said we also have a number
