To feel differently about friends and neighbours who publish their controversial views all over facebook?

So shoot me, I am on fb. I use it quite alot to update friends and family who live abroad and not near to me on what we are up to. No doubt this annoys some people but they can block me if it does.

I have some fb friends who are also my neighbours. They clearly feel quite strongly about a controversial medical issue that they have taken a certain stance about. I am very strongly of the opposite (and more mainstream) view. I can't look at them the same way now as I think their views are at best daft and at worst dangerously misguided.

AIBU not to really talk to them any more?

I don't want to make it obvious because they are my neighbours, but I wish I didn't know this about them.

Can you share the controversial medical issue?

"No doubt this annoys some people but they can block me if it does."

You've answered your own question. Block them if you don't like it.

YABU. If it is about what I think it is about, you need to be challenging them on this bullshit. So far I'm on the last word in a 'discussion' on vaccines with one of my Fb friends (former colleague from when I lived abroad so am unlikely to set them again) and am hoping that at least one of his idiotic friends might develop some insight.

It's difficult to comment without knowing what the specific issue is.

Generally speaking I would say you are being unreasonable. I use Facebook in the same way that I would chat to a friend or acquaintance at the pub. Which means sometimes I post trivial stuff such as sharing that I love my new mascara and sometimes I post serious issues such as my views on current affairs etc. I have noticed that some people only want to discuss trivia and get annoyed by serious issues being discussed. They are welcome to delete me if I annoy them.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion on their bodies/beliefs as long as they don't want to control others.

By all means engage and argue or block. That's your choice.

waxer vs anti?

tabulahrasa · 09/02/2015 10:17

I don't mind people posting controversial stuff (on my newsfeed it's usually political stuff) but, only if they're willing to discuss it.

The people that annoy me are the ones who post things that people are going to have different opinions about and then complain when people tell them why they have a different opinion.

If you just want everyone to agree with you, then only say it to people who you know feel the same way...

I think you would be unreasonable not to talk anymore. They are neighbours and don't have to be your soulmates. Go with courtesy and as you leave this issue in the past you can refocus on what you have in common.

However I understand your feelings, my neighbours really upset me about Scottish Independence and I'm just getting back to liking them again... I know the General election is coming up!

We'll just avoid the subject of constitutional and economic armageddon this time around I think!
