To think that rugby players really show footballers up for the wimps that they are?

Just saw on the news that a Welsh rugby player was knocked out cold during their game with England last night, despite most likely being concussed he got up and carried on. Earlier in the game another player broke his nose, was strapped up and just carried on. Meanwhile footballers roll around on the pitch in mock agony when they break a sodding finger nail!

I'm a life long football fan, but I'm becoming more and more disillusioned with the game if I'm honest. The vile insults hurled at each other by fans, the over dramatic displays of "agony" because the played want a penalty thrown in their way. It's pathetic.

Why isn't rugby more popular than football?

I think that the injuries suffered are often more life changing in football. A snapped tibia versus being knocked out... I know which one I'd take!!

DoctorDonnaNoble · 07/02/2015 19:23

YANBU - rugby is MUCH better than football!

cathpip · 07/02/2015 19:25

I find the shouting and arguing with the ref appalling in football, you don't see that in rugby.

Delilahfandango · 07/02/2015 19:26

It's a mystery to me but that could be because rugby is number 1,2,3 and 4 in this house. Footballs a dirty wordGrin I have been slowly indoctrinated! Although that player shouldn't have played on with a head injury! DS plays rugby and you don't get all the nastiness that supposedly happens in kids football - there really is a strong emphasis on fair play and respect!

SoupDragon · 07/02/2015 19:26

Seriously??

skylark2 · 07/02/2015 19:26

I remain startled that in 2015 there are still games so backward that it's considered a mark of toughness to play on with concussion.

The player in question gets a free pass - you don't think straight when you are concussed. His coach and team doctor should be fired and struck off respectively.

lljkk · 07/02/2015 19:26

Pro cyclists show up everybody else as wimps.
Except the ultra-marathoners, I suppose.

SoupDragon · 07/02/2015 19:27

Which is it - the fixable leg or the potential brain injury?

usualsuspect333 · 07/02/2015 19:27

I think it's bloody stupid to get up and carry on playing if you have been knocked unconscious.
.

HangingBasketCase · 07/02/2015 19:28

Really Mouth? I think a serious head injury is far more likely to cause life changing injuries than a broken leg!

The playing on of the Welsh player is being investigated. It is against current practice to play on with concussion.

ghostyslovesheep · 07/02/2015 19:28

rugby is a contact sport - football not so much Hmm

so I guess it's like saying cheese makes a rubbish lamp shade ...

also the guy who was concussed - very controversial decision to play on - in other sports - such as boxing, he would not have been allowed to

dying of a brain bleed isn't hard - just sad

SoupDragon · 07/02/2015 19:28

I think there are strict rules regarding concussion in rugby. There certainly are at the junior levels.

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/02/2015 19:28

Rugby injuries at their worst tend to be catastrophic eg neck breaks. However generally they are at the more minor end of the scale. Footballers tend to snap their limbs in awful ways.

However I would say that the culture of feigning injury is exclusive to football. For example, the Barcelona team being trained on convincing falling aka diving.

honeysucklejasmine · 07/02/2015 19:30

What?!

But then i am probably biased, as my brother suffered at "catastrophic" injury playing rugby. Luckily they have a charity for this sort of thing, even as just a Sunday morning player. Financial support is excellent, but he'll never walk again.

Still loves the game though!

Alisvolatpropiis · 07/02/2015 19:30

Doctor are we talking about North?

He seemed to hit the ground hard later on in the game as well, on top of the initial injury. Although he played on he didn't seem right from the initial injury onwards. I'm not surprised that his playing on is being investigated.

DoctorDonnaNoble · 07/02/2015 19:33

Yup. Didn't watch the game myself, but yes. They are indeed investigating the decision to let North play on.

MaudeLebowski · 07/02/2015 19:34

I think they both have different skills and physical capacities & capabilities, so comparing them is goady and moot.

26Point2Miles · 07/02/2015 19:35

Very irresponsible.... Thought rugby was better than that

mywholelifeisaheadache · 07/02/2015 19:41

I love rugby but letting him play on was reckless and dangerous. I'm very pro bringing in rules that mean anyone sustaining a neck or head injury is removed from the game. Injuries in rugby can be life changing

youbethemummylion · 07/02/2015 19:48

Playing on despite injury is not unheard of in football either, in the World Cup there was a footballer cant remember which country who was very obviously concussed and confused after a head injury who came back on, I remember being astounded at the time that the team Doctor and referee had allowed it. I do like the respect rugby players have for the referees decision and the lack of arguing and appealing with the ref that goes on.

YouTheCat · 07/02/2015 19:51

Rugby is better anyway.

Football is packed with overpaid arses most of the time.

SmokingGun · 07/02/2015 19:51

I've just got home from a football match (premier league) where I watched several players roll around on the floor for 3+ mins, holding various body parts and seemingly in agony then get up and run off quite fit and well. It really does ruin the flow of the game and I suspect it is used as a way to break up play when the pressure is on.

girliefriend · 07/02/2015 19:53

yanbu real men play rugby Wink

Moreisnnogedag · 07/02/2015 19:53

I don't think he should have been allowed to play on. Although I have to say I see many more injuries from rugby than football - apart from twisted ankles. It's the rolling on the floor that does me.

There's a fab picture of this giant player (I think a kiwi) being told off by a tiny ref and he's just stood there, head down, no argument. Shows the discipline. Much better than the idiot who threw a toddler tantrum for getting a red card for slapping a player in the African cup.
