to refuse to buy my daughter Heelys...

… when she still hasn't mastered her roller skates?
She begged for, and got, roller skates for Christmas, tried them a few times and said they were too difficult.
In her defence we live in the depths of the countryside with no tarmac etc around, so she is limited where she can practice - in the kitchen being pretty much the only place! And because my younger two have had chicken pox, I haven't had time to take her anywhere for the last three weeks.
But now it is her 8th birthday next week and she is begging for Heelys - apparently she has heard they are easier than roller skates.
I am tempted to say she has to keep on with the roller skates, but if someone can tell me that Heelys are indeed easier, I might think again.
Any advice very gratefully received! She is a skinny tall about-to-be 8 year old with size 13.5 feet.

My daughter loved heelys. Definitely easier than roller skates as you can just put your foot flat when you want to stop which seems to require less coordination than roller skates. Plus she could wear them in shops providing she didn't skate in them (har har) pretended I didn't see her sometimes

Try gliders. Amazon. Heelys you grow out of once their feet grow out of the shoes. Gliders you can make bigger as they grow and you skate with them the same way as heelys. They are much cheaper too. My dd has these www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00MXSTS28/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?qid=1423245468&sr=8-9&pi=AC_SX110_SY165&keywords=gliders+skates

My DD fractured her arm in two places on her first outing in Heely's. Had to be reset under GA. Would not recommend!! Appreciate that most children manage just fine.

I detest them
Watch a child walk in them - they walk on their toes (equinus gait ) or the lateral side of the foot when they're not using the 'Heely' part.

My DD ran over her own finger with the heelys she was wearing... its a long story

The doctor who saw her in A&E said that heelys and trampolines had been banned for his kids due to the cases he saw!

I never caved on the trampoline front... as you can guess, she's a bit accident prone.

Starlightbright1 · 06/02/2015 18:16

MyDS had some second hand heeleys...I thought they might help his balance can say they haven't..I don't let him wear them to the shops...He has just mastered rollerskates though with a couple of roller discos.

Ds2's best friend had them. For about 15 min. After the operation to pin his arm bones back together Heelys were strangely missing and remain so.

Skates are easier than Healies

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 06/02/2015 20:11

If she can't master skates then she won't master heely's IMO So far in ds's cupboard we have standard issue skates, heely's and a skateboard (actually 2 skateboards a normal sized one a mini type thing which ds insisted was so much easier to use). Some children just aren't designed to put wheels on their feet.

Charlotte3333 · 06/02/2015 20:15

My 9 year old had some. He's got dyspraxia so is possibly more clumsy than your average child but my god, the accidents we got through are beyond ridiculous. He fell down the stairs after forgetting he was wearing them. He tried to skate around Twycross Zoo and fell into a (thankfully) empty pushchair.

Loves his trampoline, though, and only injury on that was DH falling out the zip-gap as he tried to climb off. Served him right, he was riling the children.

My dd loves her Heeleys. They are quite tricky to master though. She is good on roller skates too but only after lots of practise (we have hard floors downstairs).

The Heeleys are great for shopping trips. She actually wants to come! I don't let her scoot about fast but she can still glide along next to the trolley.

CatThiefKeith · 06/02/2015 20:29

I'm a demon on skates, but never mastered Heeleys. I ended up taking the wheels out and using them as trainers. I am very immature

Did your dd have inline skates or quads? Quads are much easier.
