Argh help me not panic- bf related!

I had surgery yesterday and this evening the pain got really bad, so I took two co-codamol. That was six hours ago and I've just given DS (six months) a huge feed without really thinking about it. Now find that it isn't advised if breastfeeding, and I worry he's had so much milk since I missed a feed he'll have had too big a dose! WIBU to go and sit next to his cot for the next few hours to check he's breathing- I can't ask DP to as he's looking after both of us and is currently having his first proper hour's sleep in nearly two days.

Argh feel so stupid! It's night time as well- at least during the day we'd be keeping an eye on him

are you in the uk? IF so I'd ring 111. They will be able to asses the dose and see if it is a dangerous amount. May book you in for an emergency GP just to make sure.

I once accidentally took too much of something (forgot I'd already taken it!!) rang 111 and a doctor called me back, took my height, weight, dosage and said "nooo you'd have to take about 10 more for a problem!"

But it's a baby, staring at her won't be the best option if she is in danger, best to ask professional advice. I took medication through pregnancy and breastfeeding that had the warnings on, but docs assured me it would be fine... really depends on doses..etc.

It will be such a small percentage after its gone through into your bloodstream then into milk, I read something about alcohol and the amount that made it into breastmilk and it was an insignificant amount.
Co-codamol isn't actually that overly strong, compare it to paracetamol, at least it isn't something like tramadol!
Having said that I would phone just to put your mind at ease.

I'm now sitting next to him and he looks absolutely fine. I don't know why I'm panicking so much- they gave me some in hospital after he was born so it's not like he's never been exposed to it before. I think I t's just because it's two, and on top of the oramorph I had yesterday, and because we've just moved him into his own room so I worry we've lost that anti-SIDS protection... I suppose all the 'SIDS is just them falling into too deep a sleep' articles are getting to me. 111 is a good idea if only to stop me being crazy. May ring in a bit. Trouble is I can't ring and keep an eye on him...

Call for advice if you are worried, but I'm sure it will be fine.

The breastfeeding network info is here - you might find it useful. It says that although codeine may not be routinely prescribed, co-codamol is fine in most cases.

I needed serious pain relief after giving birth and was told by two midwives and hv that co- codamol was fine, just not to smash it because it makes you constipated. I only took one dose at night when the pain was worse but did this on and off for a few weeks and ds was fine. I do remember him having a mega-sleep the first time so double checked with hv at that point, but she reassured me. in other words I don't think yyou've done anything wrong but obvs do check it out for yourself if you're concerned.

Please don't worry! You're fine! I have an ibuprofen allergy and was prescribed codeine following an EMCS. I was very weary to take it however I was reassured by a doctor and three different midwives that it was fine so I took about 6 a day for the week after. The only side effect for baby is that they may be a bit more sedate so you may have to wake them up for feed etc. it's so hard to constantly watch what you're consuming. I'd say you being in less pain and able to care for the baby is the main thing so you've done the right thing.

I was about to say exactly the same as broomy. Newborn DD was constipated and sleepy from the codeine but that is all.

I was told that it is fine for breastfeeding and I have taken it before, I didn't notice any changes in the DC. Please try not to worry, although a call to nhs line should help to put your mind at rest.

I was prescribed Tramadol while exclusively breastfeeding a new born (hideous forceps birth) So a couple of much- weaker codeine tablets wouldn't be anything at all to worry about, in my experience.

Another one prescribed codeine after EMCS while EBF. No ill effects. Also probably a higher dose at 30mg IIRC while cocodamol tends to contain 8mg if over the counter.

Another one who took co-codamol after EMCS here. No problems breastfeeding newborn. Don't worry.

Me too - was shovelling co-coda mol in for a couple of weeks after emcs, and exclusively bf.

Really, really, really don't worry. At all. I suffer with severe migraine and regularly take co codamol and codeine (plus shit loads of other pain relief Sad) and have bf three babies till they were 12 months. I've spoken to numerous Drs, paeds, bf midwives etc and they all concluded that it was fine.

I had to take co-codamal for gallstones pain when DD1 was feeding. I didn't notice anything untoward and it was prescribed. The only time I had to express / dispose was because of the operation to remove it (general anesthetic).
