To worry about stale smoke and cot death?

We are renting a flat short term from a friend of a friend. Just arrived and remembered he is a smoker. The place has a stale smoke smell, fairly mild but definitely noticeable. Obviously no one will be smoking in here now we are here but does the stale smoke pose any SIDS risk to my 3 month old baby? Could anyone suggest reputable links for me please?

Lullabytrust website?

I don't know about the SIDS risk, but if you fill a water sprayer with half water and half distilled vinegar and spray it around the room, it will get rid of the smell.

Okay, the room will smell a bit weird for a few hours but after the chip-shop smell wears off, you will have a room free of smoke odour. Grin

I'm not sure op, I just know that babies of a smoker are at much higher risk of SIDs. I don't know about the dangers of 'stale smoke' though. I know that it is advised that smokers change their top before holding a newborn, so it is possible that it could be harmful I would suggest. Air the flat well, and see how it goes. Has all furniture and furnishings been removed?

Google could probably help here.

Laymans opinion: you are probably likely to find a lot of quite muddy research but I'd highly doubt that there is a proven significant risk, especially since it's probably been aired quite well. And y y to the chip shop deodorant, really works!

Thank you all. I didn't know about the vinegar, that's a great tip! We are using their furniture etc but baby has his own travel cot. I agree I think it's going to be hard to find any research specifically about stale smoke smell. I guess there's nothing I can really do but ventilate well and have a good clean.
