Looking for colouring-in stuff for my DSs on Amazon, I came across a whole range of books marketed at boys and girls, such as:
www.amazon.co.uk/Boys-Holiday-Colouring-Book-Books/dp/1780550715/ref=pd_sim_b_11?ie=UTF8&refRID=1AFH6TP0KMN76VEWD0J6

The boys' ones are titled 'Amazing Boys', 'Brilliant Boys' etc, while the girls' ones are 'Gorgeous Girls' and 'Beautiful Girls' Angry Angry

The blurb for the boys' holiday one reads "With roller coasters, sand castles, sailboats, and skis, there's all sorts of holiday fun for boys to enjoy" - for all children to enjoy, surely?

Am I alone in getting pissed off at this? I am sure the books are lovely but why on earth does colouring-in have to be gender-specific? Or maybe I am over-reacting and it's just a good way to get boys to colour when they might not otherwise... I don't know. Genuinely interested to hear others' views on this one.

It is bothersome but save your teeth gnashing for picking up people on MN about casual sexism.

Last night I pulled a user up for calling some girls another poster had mentioned "Little bitches" she said "Girls can be such little bitches!"

I said Imagine if I said "boys can be such little bastards" casually about some boys!

there would be no difference, some girls are bitches, some boys are, some girls are bastards, some boys are

Why do people get so het up about stuff like this?

I can understand the Brilliant/Beautiful issue as we are teaching that looks are more important to our children, but your example..... nah

You are not alone. There's a whole campaign called 'let toys be toys' which has been successful at getting some high street retailers to stop labelling toys as gender specific. Obviously hasn't got anywhere near Amazon yet! Girls are given so many messages that adventure, space, science and bravery are just for boys and they should stick to looking pretty and playing with dolls that is no wonder women are woefully underrepresented in careers like engineering. Drives me mad!

I searched long and hard for a truly unisex colouring book, especially tricky if you're fussy about paper quality Grin

I was pleasantly surprised by the selection in Wilkinsons.

I really don't want my daughter to be limited to princesses and butterflies.

The Let Toys Be Toys campaign has had some great successes, and is expanding into Let Books Be Books and Let Clothes Be Clothes I believe.

Once because it's disgusting to call children bitches that's why.
