Should I have called the ambulance?

I have, btw.

Got a call from a friend wanting dh to take him to a&e, but dh out. Friend is a real tough bloke who doesn't hurt easily, so I know it's bad, but he is pretty incoherent and not making much sense. Dh is out picking up dd from 15 or so miles away in other direction, so he's not going to be quick.

I tell friend to call ambulance, but I'm not sure he understands, says he's torn something in his chest. I call dh (don't know friend's address, dh does) and then I call ambulance.

DH and dd are now on their way to friend's place. 999 bloke is trying to phone hurt friend.

Have just remembered we have another friend who doesn't live far from hurt friend. Why the hell didn't I call him? I'm a twat.

I've got nasty lurgy and brain not functioning well today.

Yes, you did the right thing. (Plus your other friend might not have been at home and able to go round and check on hurt friend.) Hope your friend is OK.

SocialMediaAddict · 03/02/2015 16:56

Hope your friend is ok. Sounds scary.

Jux · 03/02/2015 17:06

Thanks, I wondered if I should have kept him talking and phoned 999 on another phone, but didn't have that bright idea until faaaar too late. Can't find other friend's number anyway (it'll be on dh's phone).

Not heard any more yet.

You did the right thing OP, good on you.

spanky2 · 03/02/2015 19:25

Glad you were right to call the ambulance.

samithesausage · 03/02/2015 20:03

You did the right thing. The thing is nasty chest infections can present themselves as the symptoms of a heart attack. (Called the ambulance on my dad once because of this)

RandomNPC · 03/02/2015 20:26

The confusion in itself would be worrying; it's never a particularly good sign. You did the right thing.

AnyFucker · 03/02/2015 20:30

Unless the other friend was a paramedic or A+E doctor with a defibrillator on his/her person you did the right thing to call an ambulance.

Jux · 03/02/2015 21:17

The main thing was I had no idea whether he'd fallen off something and was bleeding out on the floor or he was having a heart attack, in both cases friend nearby would have been able to help a bit and call ambulance, describe his state etc. when I spoke to emergency svs I couldn't even say "yes he's breathing" only "he was breathing a few minutes ago" as I had no idea what state he really was in.

Anyway, he's being cared for now thank goodness.

Oh it's awful when things like this happen. You did right. I hope he's ok. Flowers

kittycatz · 03/02/2015 22:10

You did the right thing - I thought it sounded like a heart attack when I read your first post. Then you posted to say it was pneumonia which can also be life-threatening. I hope he recovers soon.

Jux · 04/02/2015 11:42

In fact, kittycat, you were right. We got a call around midnight, and it turns out he had a heart attack. It was the thing I was worried about too, that or he'd fallen off a scaff tower and ripped his chest open!

It was the paramedics who thought it might be pneumonia, and dh told me that as if it had been established.

I am now waiting (again) to hear if he needs anything while he's in hospital.
