Horrified about chemicals on highchair - aibu?

MIL just used Mr Muscle kitchen spray to wipe down 6 month DS's high chair.
I've got anxiety issues anyway and while I appreciate her cleaning the chair after his food, I am horrified that she has covered his chair in chemicals...

Aibu/pfb?

Spare it might be a wooden one.

OP yabu to be horrified. I do understand though. Wipe it down with boiling water.

Hmm
SandorClegane · 03/02/2015 17:18

It might be a wooden one! Lol!

badtime · 03/02/2015 17:18

MrsTawdry, wood is, when you come right down to it, made of chemical's too. 'Chemicals' is just another word for matter.

Topseyt · 03/02/2015 17:19

If it is a PVC high chair with a plastic tray and foam padding inside then it is actually made with plenty of chemicals.

We really are surrounded by chemicals all the time. You can't get away from them.

sparechange · 03/02/2015 17:22

MrsTawdry
Wooden shoulder pads?
Even if it is a wooden one, it will have been varnished with chemicals
And the plate/spoon/bowl used to feed him - more chemicals
Even the food he has eaten - chemicals
Do you have any idea how many e numbers are in the average organic tomato..?

I love chemicals. Mmmm the smell of bleach on a Sunday morning...

But I'm a clean freak Smile

The question for me would be: what chemicals are going to be left on the high chair if other chemicals are not used to remove them? A variety of bacteria for sure... And Mr Muscle will kill more bacteria than soapy water. Having said that, I was never too worried about either bacteria or cleaning products and my three kids seem to have survived. But you have to do what you think is right for your situation, and that probably means having a quiet word and explaining your concerns.

TheFecklessFairy · 03/02/2015 17:39

I would stop NOW OP - or you will, for certain, have a paranoid germ-phobic chemical-phobic child for the rest of your life. And YOU will have a nervous breakdown once he starts eating dirt and worms and playing in the park.

SergeantJarhead · 03/02/2015 17:46

Op, you're getting slated waaaay too much and it isn't fair, particularly considering your anxiety. I have anxiety (v bad, think 'The world is ending because the bibs aren't ironed') and know how stressful every minor detail can become.
I would consider it from this perspective: you would rather have a clean high chair than a dirty one, right? Also, you can just wash it down with plain soapy water or an organic-nasty-compound-free type spray. If you can live with any of the above ... consider this a battle won.
Also consider that you wouldn't want your fears to be passed on to your lovely baby, keep calm and obsessively clean on Op ;)
