To hate it when people say 'you look tired'?

I mean, how the fuck are you supposed to respond to that statement?

'Yeah, I'm knackered actually?'

Or, 'I'm fine. I've had plenty of sleep I just look like shit.'

'Thanks for noticing and drawing attention to it'.

YANBU. I hate it. It is passive aggressive, intended to belittle and make you feel like shit.

Been getting this a lot recently, my nonplussed response is "er, yeah...I've got a 4 month old baby..." Even more annoying though is SIL repeatedly saying "how come you're so tired all the time?" Er...

This will sound like humblebrag, but I have a fairly olive complexion, and penchent for red lipstick and green eyeshadow, and I get the opposite, as in, literally "I can't believe how NOT tired you look"! A few weeks back, I walked into an evening meeting and one of the ladies said "I am tired ALL the time- I can't believe how you are NOT tired". I remember last year I had bronchitis and had to take three rounds of antibiotics and in the midst of it I met a friend and she actually said "you can't have bronchitis- you look too good!" I am not humblebragging (not wholly, at least :) ), but at some point it does get tiresome, especially as the tone of voice isn't necessarily complimentary, but rather irritated, as if, how dare I, when everybody is so sick/busy/tired, go around NOT being tired.

TL;DR- ppl should not comment on each other's appearances unless it is really meant positively and generously.

Kindle, you made me laugh. I have been blessed with the same resting face. I only found out recently that an old school acquaintance never spoke to me as she thought I hated her and was giving her 'evils'. Grin

I like it when DH says it followed by "sit by the fire and I'll fix you a gin and tonic".

He does that quite often."

hell yeah!

How about (with a big smile):

"Thankyou for noticing. And so do you."

areyoubeingserviced · 05/02/2015 20:40

it depends who tells me
If it is someone I dislike- I assume that they are being bitchy.

If it is said by someone I like- I assume that I do look tired and that they are giving me the opportunity to moan about the cause of my tiredness.
