I don't know.

I work in a school and we recently has a new office built. It's a tiny add-on to an already planned extension. I am thrilled to finally have somewhere quiet to work but the space is very small. As a result it was agreed that we should have fitted office furniture to maximise the space but quotes from office furniture companies were huge, so the head got a kitchen company he knows to do it.

It looks great and does what I need it to do, expect for he fact that my desk is in fact a kitchen work-surface and as such is unfinished underneath, unlike a desk which would be finished both sides IYSWIM.

This means that I permanently have big dusty patches on my thighs and anything a bit fragile (like tights) keeps catching.

I understand and support the reasons behind the original decision but WIBU to ask that they do something to seal the underside of the desk?

Explain?

MrSimms · 02/02/2015 10:53

Hmm, I did. there seems to be a problem of quite a few posts ATM, where the text isn't displayed when you click in.

Phew! I thought that was just me Smile

Bair · 02/02/2015 10:58

Ici you're showing as OP on this for me.

I'm assuming 'Explain?' was your one word response to not seeing the text.

Nomama · 02/02/2015 11:01

I have reported this thread as an example of the oddity... hopefully it is just a temporary glitch.

Nomama · 02/02/2015 11:02

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh - where did that come from Grin

Lj8893 · 02/02/2015 11:03

I don't think ywbu. All you can do is ask!

Ilovereadingbooks · 02/02/2015 11:06

could you not have a word with the Head or the caretaker of the school and ask if they could do something to the desk to make it less rough for you? It does seem unreasonable if your clothes are being ruined, tights and things are not cheap to keep on paying out for/ replace. They might be able to sand it down or something? anyway, good luck, hope you can get it sorted out soon.

ShadowSpiral · 02/02/2015 11:06

No, YANBU.

I'd ask if something can be done about the underside of the desk.

NotYouNaanBread · 02/02/2015 11:11

YANBU.

Although in the meantime, I would tape a large piece of smooth card or even plastic over the bottom of the table to make the surface smooth and non-snaggy/dusty.

DoJo · 02/02/2015 11:16

Sticky back plastic?

SaucyMare · 02/02/2015 11:18

sticky back plastic or varnish are the best options (what i would do at home anyway)

honeysucklejasmine · 02/02/2015 11:19

There is no reason the site manager (or DT technician if you have one) can't sand it down. Should have before fitting it really. But yes, stick something under it as a temporary solution. Smile

Unidentifieditem · 02/02/2015 11:20

Maybe stick wrapping paper up under the worktop? Sounds shit to have snagged tights

lougle · 02/02/2015 11:22

If it's worktop then it will be chipboard so not sandable. Varnish would stop dusty patches but it still wouldn't be smooth. I agree that cardboard or even plexiglass on the bottom would work.

Op I don't think it would be unreasonable to ask. There's bound to be a simple solution to this!
