Bin Day Etiquette

Tomorrow is bin day here (actually it's recycling day, but this thread refers to both bins and recycling in equal measure).

We always put our bins as early in the evening as we can because a) we'd probably forget otherwise and b) it saves the loud trundling and banging at 11pm followed by cussing as you somehow manage to make the bin grind your knuckles along the pebbledash

However, I do not feel that the bin being out on the street is a free-for-all for the neighbours to rush over and cram their refuse into our bin. Sometimes there's more to go in! So AIBU?

I'm all for using the neighbours leftover space if you've run out, but would it be so hard to just ask? Or at least wait until the morning when there's unlikely to be any more. Last week our recycling bin was overflowing with old school work-books, I'd estimate about 70-100!

And I have no idea who it is. I heard the tell-tale flap of the lid closing about 30 mins ago (fair enough it's probably late enough this time to not be unreasonable). I rushed to the window to see who was there... nobody. So they must be trying to sneak.

Hmm, I need to get a life Grin or maybe a bigger bin

Pretty sure u can't be fined for leaving ur bins out but maybe depends where they're left.
Ours are left on our lawn as there's no pavement (end of a cul-de-sac) so it's on our land. We can leave it there 24/7 7 days a week if we really wanted to

Just looked on their council website ...they have changed it to out by 7.30am and brought back in asap after emptying, lots of dire warnings - if you do leave it out longer your bin may be subject to vandalism or used to burgle your property etc...and if your bin is stolen or vandalised you are responsible for paying for a new one - cost is £40 ...
Looking at another council (where I used to live) -if you leave it out too long (on pavement) you will be warned etc and if you still fail to comply will be issued with a fixed penalty fine of £50...

You're right I've just had a look and my council says you have to bring bins in by 11pm or else they can issue a fine.
That's all well and good somebody sat in a council office making up these rules but what about shift workers? Do they have to employ somebody to bring their bins in?
How utterly ridiculous!

I see one of my neighbours when I leave for work STANDING in other people's bins every week to compress the rubbish so he can fit his rubbish in! This once resulted in a massive row between him and another neighbour in the middle of the road!
