To ask some mums for advice re: my newborn??

Sorry! being a bit naughty and asking for some advice on here as it's popular! That's probably unreasonable in itself! But any help would be greatly appreciated.

Vomiting!

My baby is 3 weeks old and is vomiting about 2/3 times a day. It is not spitting up, she does that too, this is vomitting up a full feed anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes after a feed. All over her face, body, my body. We've changed our bed twice because of it, she's covered the sofa. My OH's mum told me not to worry, then she did it on her and her reaction was "ooooh no that's not right, that really is a lot!"

She is formula fed Cow and gate exclusively (she was combination fed up until last week) She takes anywhere between 1.5 and 3 ounces a feed. I burp/wind her every half ounce I keep her upright during her feed and 30 minutes following the feed.

We mentioned it to the health visitor on wednesday and I told her I was considering taking her to the doctors. She said that a doctor can't prescribe anything and that I should make sure I am not over feeding (I thought this was not possible!!) but she has a small appetite anyway and is only feeding 3/4 hours. She told me to buy infacol, which I did, and it has helped her wind, but she's throwing up just as much.

She's gained weight since birth, was 6lb 11 and on wednesday she weighed in at 7lb. She's sleeping well, eating fine, and if she vomits she roots for a feeding immediately after (And usually won't throw up immediately after)

She cries only for a feed and if she has a bit of wind. But nothing close to colic, she's just irritable between the hours of 12:00 and 6am.

The only thing out of the ordinary is she has a spotty/rashy face, but I've been told that's normal.

I'm going to ring the doctors tomorrow, But I'm sure they will fob me off because she is otherwise fine.

Does anyone have any ideas of anything else I could try to relieve this or should I just wait it out??

infant gaviscon helped my younger son who had the same problem. he was fine with breast milk, just the formula caused him to have stomach ache and vomitting

EbwyIsUpTheDuff hopefully it will work for her then. Don't really have a choice about what I feed her so hopefully it eases everything for her :)

I just dumped a sachet of it in with his formula (as the doctor instructed, contrary to the packaging instructions) and shook it hard.

I was thinking about this today - and this is no cristism between bottle and breast! Its not,....but my first was bottle fed ( with breast until 3 months) and always threw up too and looking back I think she was over fed and also didnt like the milk - cow and gate.

my second has thrown up literally - twice! only two projectiles! she is two.

many a time in the dead of night we had to change sheets, only for her to do it all over again and again!

second has been exclusively breast and only time she seemed to throw up without illness was when i fed her to keep her occupied in group thing...

BTW some HV are full of shit and some are OK....

I had this with DS whenever we used regular, traditional type bottles. It never happened when we switched to tommee tippee anti colic ones.

Hope it works well for you. Two thoughts:
At 7lbs, the "average" baby would need about 16 oz in 24 hours (does that sound like about what they're having?)
Gaviscon seems great for some babies, but some find it hard to poo on it, so do keep an eye on nappies, as well as the puking.

TheHermitCrab · 02/02/2015 19:46

KnittedJimmyChoos Really irrelevant though as breast feeding is not an option anymore.. can really only make the best of the situation I'm in! x

HedgehogsDontBite already using the Tommee Tippee ones x

nocoolnamesleft Well if you say her average feed is 2 to 3 oz (sometimes 1.5, sometimes she'll come back for more after 3 and will cry until I feed more, she's very inconsistent) then she would need between 5 and 8 feeds in 24 hours. So it's about right :).

The constipation has been mentioned to me, she only poops every 2 days or so but the consistency is always ok. But to be on the safe side we are going to get some "comfort" formula tomorrow to make some of her feeds with. (not all of her feeds as I'm not sure she will be constipated yet!)
