Father jailed for treating sick daughter

Father treats sick daughter with cannabis oil

Adam Koessler is the father of a 2-year-old, a little girl named Rumer Rose. Rumer has been diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma and was hospitalized for treatment in Australia

And Koessler, according to reports, was barred from seeing her

Koessler, an Australian, gave Rumer cannabis oil during her cancer treatment, a decision that reportedly led to his arrest earlier this month. The charges meant Koessler couldn’t see Rumer, though that changed this week, when officials allowed a hospital visit, according to updates on his Facebook page

Heartbreaking story Sad This dad is now in jail - going to check out their facebook page to see the latest but he says daughter was improving, although could have been the hospital treatment she was getting but the fact cannabis is illegal and he is supplying a child with what dosage?

AIBU though to think this isn't the time for him to be in jail? Surely he could under house arrest to spend time with his daughter?

LurkingHusband is talking about people with MS, not children with brain tumours.

There really is no point of commonality.

Caronaim · 01/02/2015 17:24

This statement from nomama is dangerous ignorant rubbish.

Cannabis resin is slowly becoming modified to be safe and effective. It should soon be legalised and controlled.

The harm done by cannabis is incalculable. like Mrssmith I have seen innumerable lives destroyed.

Educational prospects for a young user are utterly sunk from the first day. it leads to apathy, educational failure, loss of prospects, unemployability, failure to function within the family or community, .............. AT BEST

And the worst effects are so so so much worse.

And for the producers too, who at typically slave labour, young men trafficked into the country for this purpose.

What these nutters that advocate cannabis fail to address every tine is that if it was produced legally, the workers would need to be paid the minimum wage, which would increase the price by several orders of magnitude! So the whole plan is totally impractical, even if the drug was not so dangerous and destructive.

it will never be safe, it is not reliably effective at anything, it is uncontrolable, and has been a disaster anywhere where attempts have been made to legalise it.

Caronaim · 01/02/2015 17:26

It is also implicated in ADHD and related behavioural problems and "conduct disorders", ( through second hand exposure)

and has been proved to lower IQ.

NOT what you give a toddler.

Caronaim · 01/02/2015 17:29

Sorry to keep on, but I really feel like slapping some of the ignorant complacent individuals I come across, who spout this rubbish about cannabis being beneficial, quite often themselves graphically demonstrating the disassociation, paranoia, apathy and damaged IQ associated with cannabis use.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 01/02/2015 17:31

The law must be abided to and the police and others involved must take action. There be little point in the law otherwise.

However my view is that cannabis should be legal for doctors to prescribe this drug.

rinabean · 01/02/2015 17:35

Caronaim would you not rather have an alive child than a possibly ADHD child???? I would say that a man who saw an opportunity to help his daughter's cancer but didn't because like "yeah but what if she grew up thick" is the shithead, not this guy

It's not like he believes arsenic is the cure for cancer or something. Or thwacking her round the head. If you can't even demonstrate the supposed harm then why the hell lock him up. I normally have very little sympathy for people who go against medical advice for their children & for fathers who do things the mother didn't want to, but in this case I do not see what he did that is so obviously wrong or what locking him up achieved.

Caronaim · 01/02/2015 17:38

rinabean I have every sympathy with the father, who did something desperate with the wild hope that it might just possibly have some good effect.

My gripe is with the people who don't know much about the reality of cannabis production and use in the uk, and want it legalised.

Mintyy · 01/02/2015 17:39

He should not have been jailed, no.

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 01/02/2015 17:45

Erm rinabean children with ADHD aren't thick what a fucking offensive thing to say.

Caronaim · 01/02/2015 17:47

we were talking about cannabis lowering IQ, as well as being implicated in ADHD, itiswhat. It wasn't an offensive post.

WannaBe · 01/02/2015 17:50

so how far do we take the idea that it's ok to go and experiment with this and that treatment precured from the internet or god-knows-where and with who-knows-what side effects?

Whether Cannabis is about to be legalised or about to have proven benefits or about to be prescribed is irrelevant. At the moment it is illegal with valid reasons. Desparation doesn't make it ok to turn your child into an experimental guinea pig and then hope to not suffer consequences on the basis that "this little girl needs her daddy."

Even drugs trials can't be entered into without the support of hospital consultants. The benefits, dosages, etc of the cannabis were unknown. He had no idea what might happen, he might even have hastened his daughter's death. If she'd died would people be saying that he shouldn't be able to sit with her while it happened because he was only doing what was in her interests? I think not.

HeeHiles · 01/02/2015 23:50

You're right WannaBe It is illegal and the law cannot be sentimental - He knew what he was risking when he chose to do this, although he is a desperate parent really believing he was helping her.

If it could be legalised for research who knows this might be exactly what will be prescribed in ten years time.

I think he should be allowed to see his daughter.

Nomama · 02/02/2015 09:20

Caronaim - you have misunderstood me. I have not made a dangerous or misinformed statement.

There is a lot of medical research into the benefits of cannabis resin. Proper medical research, government and WHO funded research. There is every hope that there will soon be a proper, legitimate medical form that can be used effectively and safely, especially in palliative care.

stormtreader · 02/02/2015 12:09

And Heroin devastates lives, so we should ban all Morphine. And Thalidomide can help shrink cancer tumours, but should be banned because of the birth defects it can cause....
I really think this is one of those issues that has potential for people to look back in 200 years and say "but they knew it helped, how could they leave so many people to die in pain because some recreational users suffered effects when they smoked the unrefined version?"
